I use BOINC both at home and at work (multiple projects on both). It's all OK at home (Win XP) but at work (Win 2000) I cannot get the World Community Grid to upload results at all! It continually times out.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this? |

rebirther certainly has hit upon the most likely cause. Please see here for more information. Based on the information you provided, this is about all we can tell you at this point. If this does not get you going, give us more details on what is happeneing.

Thanks for the quick response.
I'd agree with you if any of the other projects I run through BOINC at work had the same problem - but they don't. I've checked through IE that we don't use a proxy. The error message I get is: 2006-01-18 14:45:42 [---] Attempting to communicate with [secure.worldcommunitygrid.org] timed out 2006-01-18 14:45:42 [World Community Grid] Temporarily failed upload of el423_04_5_0: timeout |

If you have a firewall running on your machine, you may need to change settings in it for the WCG site. Try shutting it down, go to BOINC Manager's Transfers tab and tell it to retry the upload. If that works, the problem is something with your firewall (which you will want to restart of course).
----------------------------------------FWIW, I run Zone Labs on my machine. From what you say and what I can find, it looks like you added WCG to your BOINC projects back on Jan. 4th. You appear to have returned 5 results but the last was on Jan. 14th so there's the question of did you change something on or just after the 14th? ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Jan 19, 2006 1:27:39 AM] |

The results you're seeing have all been returned by my PC at home - no results have been returned by the PC at work.
Your suggestion about turning off the firewall is probably a good one - but I don't think I'll be allowed to turn off the company firewall - too risky! I think I'll just have to remove WCG from the work PC and leave it on the home PC - maybe double up its processing share. |

Hum. This may be a redundant question but I want to make sure. The agent that you are running at work is BOINC right?
----------------------------------------If it is, then it sounds like there is something strange blocking you. From work can you access the WCG website with your browser? If not, they may have it blocked in the firewall. Otherwise, we are going to need the services of a WCG Tech to see if they can suggest something else. ![]() |

Yes, I am running BOINC (5.2.13) at work (and at home).
Also yes, I can get to the WCG website from work ... and download new work, etc, etc. The only thing I can't do is upload the results due to the above timeout. So it's definitely something strange ![]() |

Okay, shutting down the firewall, retrying the upload and restarting the firewall would probably only take a minute or two. Double check what's in the link in RT's post. Can you confirm that you are running the Zone Labs firewall on your machine at work? I do so if so, I could list what entries it has for WCG on mine and you could compare to yours.

Hello JamieCampbell,
It sounds as though you need to get in touch with your company network manager. He needs to allow you to establish a secure protocol link to the server. He can use 'Contact Us' if he has any security questions for our staff. It is always necessary to follow company policy on company computers. mycrofth |
