"HIV-derived antibacterial shows promise against drug-resistant bacteria

A team of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh has developed antibacterial compounds, derived from the outer coating of HIV, that could be potential treatments for drug-resistant bacterial infections and appear to avoid generating resistance. These new agents are quite small, making them inexpensive and easy to manufacture. The research was published in the June 2013 issue of the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

The first of many probable applications will likely be the chronic bacterial infections in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients "that frequently develop resistance to all standard antibiotics, and are the leading cause of death in these patients," says senior author Ronald Montelaro..."

Re: Interesting news articles about AIDS

Given the incredible cunning of the HIV virus one has to wonder if it has found a way to exploit this mechanism, and if understanding this might help rebuild immune systems?

La Jolla Institute discovers new player critical to unleashing T cells against disease

SAN DIEGO (June 23, 2013) A major study from researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology provides new revelations about the intricate pathways involved in turning on T cells, the body's most important disease-fighting cells, and was published today in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.

The La Jolla Institute team is the first to prove that a certain type of protein, called septins, play a critical role in activating a calcium channel on the surface of the T cell. The channel is the portal through which calcium enters T cells from the blood stream, an action essential for the T cell's survival, activation, and ability to fight disease..."

Re: Interesting news articles about AIDS

Its been known about for several years that Genistein could cripple the HIV virus, but because its a common product that cannot be patented its been ignored. Its my belief that modern science could have done MUCH better against HIV if the profit motive could be got out of the way. They might have even found cure by now. Governments must either allow private companies to patent items such as Genistein for certain uses when proven to be in the public interest (and eliminating HIV is definitely in the public interest) or be prepared to provide Government research funding in these cases.

Plant-based compound may inhibit HIV

George Mason University research

A compound found in soybeans may become an effective HIV treatment without the drug resistance issues faced by current therapies, according to new research by George Mason University researchers.

It's in the early stages, but genistein, derived from soybeans and other plants, shows promise in inhibiting the HIV infection, says Yuntao Wu, a professor with the George Mason-based National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases and the Department of Molecular and Microbiology..."

HIV/AIDS vaccines: Defining what works
Analysis presented at the American Crystallographic Association Meeting in Hawaii may help researchers design a future vaccine against HIV/AIDS

Designing an effective HIV/AIDS vaccine is something of a paradox: a good vaccine would be safe and look enough like HIV to kick-start the immune system into neutralizing the virus – but the problem is that this is exactly what the human immune system has trouble doing even when it's exposed to the real thing.

Now a team of researchers led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. has developed a strategy for inducing a key part of an effective immune response to HIV. By tracing the evolution of HIV-recognizing molecules called antibodies taken from the blood of rare individuals whose immune systems are naturally able to target and neutralize the virus, they may have found a way to replicate this for everybody..."

Potential Treatment For Deadly, HIV-Related Blood Cancer Identified

Researchers at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered a promising new way to treat a rare and aggressive blood cancer most commonly found in people infected with HIV.

The USC team shows that a class of drugs called BET bromodomain inhibitors effectively targets primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), a type of cancer for which those drugs were not expected to be effective..."

Food fungi in developing countries linked to worse HIV infection

Two common fungi found on food in developing countries could be worsening the effects of HIV, say researchers from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Their study, published in the World Mycotoxin Journal, found that types of fungus on stored foods such as rice, wheat, nuts and corn, are linked to higher HIV viral loads (higher concentrations of the virus in infected people's blood)..."

HIV Virus Used As Vector To Get Gene Therapy Into Six Children

The HIV Virus can be used to treat two severe genetic diseases, according to two studies published in the journal Science.

Researchers from the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (TIGET) in Milan, Italy, have revealed that the HIV virus can be used to treat metachromatic leukodystrophy, a disease impairing the fatty covering that acts as an insulator around nerve fibers and Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome, an immune system deficiency reducing the ability to form blood clots..."

Researchers Have Discovered Synthetic Agents Used To Treat HIV Inflammation

HIV can cause serious inflammation, regardless of drug therapy, as it develops slowly in immune cells called macrophages. However, new research conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) has just found that there are synthetic agents with anti-inflammatory properties, related to the active ingredient in cannabis, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which could limit and treat the chronic inflammation...

...living longer with HIV is associated with inflammation, which can be the cause of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) according to the first author of the study, Servio H. Ramirez, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM)...

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) occurs when HIV enters the nervous system and affects the nerve cells. It can result in attention, memory, and problem solving impairment. Symptoms of the condition include:

Headaches
Forgetfulness
Confusion
Pain because of nerve damage
Motor problems

Ramirez and team looked at a specific protein located on the surfaces of macrophages, called the CB2 receptor. The CB2 receptor acts as a binding site for the primary active compounds of cannabis, called cannabinoids. It could have the potential to block the inflammation which occurs in the central nervous system.

CB2 does not cause any of the psychoactive effects which are commonly associated with cannabis, making it unlike its counterpart, the CB1 receptor..."

Clearest ever pictures of immune cells could help treat cancers and HIV

Immunity has never looked so good. Scientists in the UK recently released images that provide the clearest snapshot of how white blood immune cells attack viral infections and tumors. They are hopeful that these clearer pictures will provide important insights into how diseases can be treated.

White blood cells are the fighters of the body, tackling infections and cancers on our behalf. But when a research team from the University of Manchester used an improved process to view them, the images revealed how the cells change the way their surface molecules are arranged when a protein involved with cancers and viruses is activated..."
