sad Re: BOINC - Link adress gives error message by BOINC

dear friends,
I tried the procedure that you recommended since I have already 3 other BOINC projects.
Unfortenatly, after giving in the URL adress http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
I always get an error message :
"Can't resolve hostname hrttps (host name not found)."

The BOINC client tries to connect with the server at URL
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi

Please can anyone give to me the correct link for the BOINC connection ?
thanks
Jochen from Germany

Hello Dr_Mabuse,
We were working on the BOINC servers while we activated the FightAIDS@Home project for BOINC.

Are you still having problems connecting, or does everything work now?

Hello Mr.Mycroft,
sorry but I tried again today and I got the same error message:
"Sending request to scheduler:https://secure.worldcommunity.grid.org/boinc/wcg/fcgi failed, error..."
"Can't resolve host name https (host name not found)"
and a new error message:
"init_op_project failed, error -113"
So I thinjk that the given link www.worldcommunitygrid.org for the BOINC Project URL is wrong because it leads to the erroneous link https... above.
Please tell me the correct URL if you know.
thanks

Re: BOINC - Link adress gives error message by BOINC

Dr_Mabuse,

it appears that you have attached the wrong url to the project. In your log that you have copied you show "secure.worldcommunity.grid.org" This should only read "secure.worldcommunitygrid.org" minus that extra '.' To fix this error you'll want to detach from the project. Then attach back to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

From what you have pasted you might need to type something like this in as an example to detach. Change directory into where you executed the ./boinc command to run. you should see a folder called "projects". check the contents of the "projects" folder.

ls projects/

you will probably see something like www.worldcommunity.grid.org. if this is the case then you'll want to type in this command.

./boinc_cmd --project www.worldcommunity.grid.org detach

This will remove the project with the improper url. For the next step you'll need to attach back to the proper project with you account key Located here .

./boinc_cmd --project_attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org <account Key>

When this command is finished you should start download work from the servers.

Also, please post your version of boinc. To get the version number of boinc by running:

./boinc --version

Hope this helps.

I just discovered a way to make a mistake. Just after I posted, Uplinger came up with the real answer. I noticed that I still had the 'Delete Post' command active on my post, so I deleted it. Everything seemed fine for a few minutes, then Uplinger's post disappeared.

Uplinger pointed out that secure.worldcommunity.grid.org/boinc/wcg/fcgi has an extra '.' in it. The URL should be for worldcommunitygrid, not worldcommunity.grid

Get rid of the '.' in your Project, then try reconnecting.

\Added: My apologies for destroying your first post, Uplinger

Re: BOINC - Link adress gives error message by BOINC

Mycroth, no harm done, it was actually me who deleted it and reposted after changing a few of my typos in the commands...I didn't want someone reading the wrong command and then posting back saying it didn't work.

Sorry for the confusion on my part.

angry Re: BOINC - Link adress gives error message by BOINC

Hello,
I tried it again using the given link adress without the '.' and it did not work. The error message was the same. By comparing with the last trieal I found out that the wrong '.' was a typing error of mine when I copied the error message of the BOINC client. So the problem lies on another ground.

Please tell me - if I put in the correct URL adress why tries the BOINC client to access another URL https://... which is not present and the server responds with error message -113 ? Do you know anybody who knows what that means ?

I tried it with the BOINC account key of my profile and also with the BOINC Cross-Project ID. The result was the same error.
You asked for the BOINC version. It is Version 4.19 for Windows. I have Windows XP Pro SP 2. The hints for detaching from the project are for an UNIX computer, I suppose. With my BOINC client I have a function which does it.
I run climateprediction.net, LHA@home and Einstain@home without any server problems.

When I first tried the original Worldcommunitygrid server the computation started but I was not able to stop it any more. Even by using the Windows Task manager to delete the process I noticed that the process started itself for new some seconds later. So I shut down Windows and noticed that it was unable to restart. The original software client must have a severe programming error which took me about 3 hours to re-establish Windows using the emergency console. I had never such a problem in any of my software over 1 year.
So if I want to contribute for AIDS@home I have to use BOINC since that is the only client that works securely on my Windows.

Please have a check-up what happened to the mentioned https//... page.
What have I to do to get access to it ?

Thanks for help

Re: BOINC - Link adress gives error message by BOINC

Hello Dr_Mabuse,
The error -113 is being caused by your old version of BOINC. The current version of BOINC (5.2.13) uses the Secure Socket Protocol for communicating with the WCG server. This was implemented in November 2005 with BOINC 5.2.4.

I hope that it is a beautiful day as you read this. You have been having so many problems that you deserve something good for a change.

The Olson Laboratory has published an encouraging status update on the FightAIDS@Home project here: http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/news/vol1.html

Thank you, that was the solution. The new BOINC client is even more user-friendly and exists in a German version.
Good Luck !
