BOINC

Hello

I started running this project on Friday with WCGs own download. I have discovered that I can also do this through BOINC and have attached nyself to the project with BOINC.

Is it OK to run the two or should I quit one of them?

Thanks

Stuart

Re: BOINC

Hello StuartJ1,
It is possible to run both programs, but they take up memory space, cache space, VM space and compete for the processor FPU. So a good rule of thumb is no more than one distibuted-computer thread per core. Otherwise contention is likely to reduce throughput.

Uhh. . . I had better shorten my reply. I advise you to stick to one client. Sounds like you prefer BOINC.

Happy crunching!!

Re: BOINC

Should you prefer to switch to BOINC, please try this procedure and let us know how it worked. Thanks.

Re: BOINC

Hello

I followed the procedure apart from I already had BOINC running with other projects. I attached myself to the WCG project. All is running BUT I am not attached to a team although my profile indicates I am and my points aren't showing on BOINC.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: BOINC

StuartJ1, your points and team located in the BOINC agent are stored in a seperate database on our servers. This means that even though your BOINC agent doesn't show your team but your profile does, your team will still get the points through our website.

With the points, you agent will only show the points that you have accumulated using the boinc agent. For points questions regarding points using the BOINC agent please refer to this link. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=linpointscalc

Hope this helps.

Re: BOINC

StuartJ1,

If you are using the Boinc agent on Windows, it will take a little longer to get the points for work units than since there are currently not as many people running that software. As more and more people start to use it (as they are with Linux) the results will be validated faster.

We are working on a Boinc results page so you will be able to track the progress of returned work units through the validation process.

That's really GOOD news. Those of us using Boinc REALLY appreciate it! smile

Don't we know it! I can't recall anything that's been more requested...ok, except a Linux client... but as far as the web site goes, I think this tops the list. Probably because all the people who wanted the Linux client now want the results page. biggrin

applause Re: BOINC

Linux is free ... works on older PCs quite well, actually better than other OSs ... cunching gives 'em sumit to do.

Of course we want a stats page ... tongue

oh, and thanks. biggrin
