Preserve agent/device statistics across system reinstall

Hello again, I am planning to migrate many computers from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. If I start running WCG when they are 2k, can I migrate the statistics and identity once I reinstall as XP?

The hardware of the machine won't change (well, maybe new optical drives) during the reinstall. Is the agent/device identity based on the hardware? Can I simply copy the UD files and reinsert them by hand on the reinstalled machine? If so, please provide the complete list of files (and registry keys) that I need.

I am trying to keep my device total accurate and keep my device stats true. If this isn't possible, admins in enterprise and educational environments must have a mess of "retired" devices from reimaging machines that are crunching. Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: Preserve agent/device statistics across system reinstall

Hello rutgers-nieer-cgilbert,
The UD Windows installation is very simple - - no registry entries. All that is really needed is the worldcommunitygrid directory (and subdirectory) plus a shortcut to UD.exe in Startup. The rest is the screensaver, the install / uninstall, and the directory entry for Start - Programs. The ID is stored in the directory, so hardware changes do not matter.

Even so, the easiest way is to reinstall, adding a number to the device name. After 2 weeks, the old installations will disappear from view, except for doubling your number of device installations.

How I do it... Just before a new OS installation, I backup WCG folder to another drive. After new OS install I reinstall WCG setup program. Close WCG install when it askes for username details. Make sure WCG is not running. Copy the backup WCG folder from other drive over the top of your newly created WCG folder and you are away, things as they were.

GothamInc has hit upon the same method other experienced users have used. While it violates the intent of the install mechanism, there is nothing inherently wrong with it and it works, is clean and neat. Just be sure that you do not mix up agents when you are working with multiple machines and end up installing the same agent on multiple machines.

Good Luck on your conversion. Thanks for contributing to the WCG and Seaons greetings!

Thanks, thanks, and thanks. I'll try this out!

Edit: It worked just as described above. Thanks again.
