That image (creature??) that comes up with FA@H is ugly! I actually think it might cause some people to turn it off; it looks horrible, whatever it is. I think it should be changed if possible. I know my mom didn't like it.

Ribbon diagrams of proteins are explained at 'Explaining the FightAIDS@Home Agent' : http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=faahagent
Better run it all the time and change the screen saver to something else! It is important to keep moms happy. mycrofth |

As soon as it is cured, the image will go away. That's the incentive.

I know my mom didn't like it. I don't understand what "creature" looks horrible and your mom don't like... I see only the title, a ribbon, and A B C panel containing protein and the graphics with docking energy...mah.... ![]() |

That's a stylized depiction of the protein that we're working on, along with a few bits of the test molecule (the colored dots). The arrows, ribbons and strings provide information about the protein's structure and folding behavior. I suppose that, as far as creatures go, it's not very attractive - but it looks scientific enough to satisfy me.

When I first saw that ribbon diagram, I thought it looked like a pelvis.
It's just a diagram, but I think it's funny-looking. |

I have to say my initial reflex was to make some snide remark, but I realize to each his own. I'm just curious what makes it so creepy in your ( and your mother's) mind. As a representation of a protein I find it fascinating it has such a complex shape. Would you suggest a different representation, like the many multi-colored balls used in other projects? Or would you suggest removing a representation altogether.

As a computer scientist, I'm much more concerned that the "ugly image" detracts from CPU cycles that would otherwise be spent on number-crunching the HIV protease fit. There's shading, rotation, and 3D hiding calculations required. I'd rather they do at least three more calculation cycles.
