confused WCG still running when different users logged in?

I've been a member for almost a year, but my stats do not seem to reflect all the time I know the computer is running. If the agent is set up for one user profile, does it continue to run when another user is logged in on the same computer? What actions do I take to be certain the project work continues regardless of who is logged in as a user?
BTW--we both have administrator privileges...could that be preventing the WCG icon from showing up in the system tray when my husband is logged in?

Red Queen --

Welcome to the forum smile (sounds like an ancient Roman greeting -- LOL). The normal installation of WCG sets it up to run whenever that user is logged in to the system. It will not run when that user is logged off. You can run it as a service (although you will then not be able to see the agent and no icon will appear in the system tray). The instructions to do this are over on the Extraordinarily Unofficial World Community Grid User Website.

Hi Red Queen, Hi Dave

If you are lucky enough to have XP Pro it also works nicely with what is known as fast user switching. If you don't log off the existing user but instead switch users the original logged in user continues to crunch without resorting to SRVANY.exe.

p.s. This worked fine on my PC until my kids decided to launch a Spyware attack on my PC after I spent an extra 3 Mins in the bath one morning. The opportunity to run other user accounts on my PC has now been rescinded smile

Dave

Thanks for the response, Dave. Unfortunately, my ability to mess with code went bye-bye after XP came out. There's just been too much going on for someone like me who doesn't stay current and isn't professionally involved in IT. The directions at the EUWCGUW were clear enough, but I was too chicken to try them out. :-)

I'll try the "other" Dave's suggestion about switching users instead. Since my kid is now grown, I hope this will work better for me than it apparently did for him. <grin>

Hello, Dave--

Thanks much for the suggestion. I'll try it as soon as I log out tonight. :-)

You could always install the Boinc version, and tell it to run as a service also. I like the Boinc version more. It downloads units to work on b4 the last one is done, it works on SMP systems, and you can manage multiple computers from one with the manager. You don't have to worry about someone just right clicking on the icon and clicking Exit (grrr @ other people who touch my computer) if you run it as a service and it will run no matter who is logged in, or even if no one is logged in (ie a reboot after a system crash).

Why don't you put a shortcut to UD.exe in the startup folder of each user of the PC ? confused

I did it and it works.
My wife and I share the same puter each under a different user-account, all I did was installing that shortcut. When I'm logged in or she is logged in, the UDagent starts and does the job. Ofcourse it can only handle one WU ( as far as I know).

Or, better yet, put the UD.exe shortcut into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup wink

But frankly speaking UD agent is way overdue for an update with Run As Service and Multiple CPU Support being the two most requested features.

Re: WCG still running when different users logged in?

I'm a new World Community Grid user.

The problem I had with putting the UD.exe shortcut in each users' startup folder (or in the All Users startup folder) is that if the first user exits using "Switch User" rather than by "Logoff", then each subsequent user gets an annoying window saying that another instance of UD.exe is already running.

On the other hand, if the first user DOES use "Logoff" to exit, but no other user logs in, then UD stops running and no processing gets done.

Apparently installing UD as a service will solve these issues, but I'm not sure I ready to go that far yet (besides losing the ability to easily monitor your World Community Grid progress).

Am I missing something with the startup folder idea?

Hi mgmcmillion,
I think you are following perfectly. Multiple users have to cooperate to get the most use out of the computer for the WCG. But the real point is to give each user control of his computer environment. However we like to view ourselves, we are secondary. smile
