Incorrect number of devices shown in my device manager

I have sucessfuly installed the agent on 2 computers at work.

I was trying to install the agent on my machine
at home which has a dial-up connection, and have ended up with
2 extra machines in the device manager with my machine at home
still not able to begin work.
I have not been able to get passed the 'agent paused' message.

The installation process was very frustrating with me first
finding out the firewall was blocking access and having to reconfigure and restart computer.

I even reinstalled the agent.

Bottom line, I have 2 extra devices showing in the device manager and
the machine not being able to connect to the grid.

How can I delete them and try again?

Re: Incorrect number of devices shown in my device manager

Hi Finiduck,

Firstly, the extra 2 devices are not really a problem and they are nothing much that you can do to delete them. You will simply have extra devices shown in your device table.

There are a number of things that you can do regarding your agent paused message as it is a frequent problem, though it has many causes.

Here is a page about the 'Agent Paused' problem: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/cause.html

You should check

1) Are the minimum requirements met. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq
Virtual memory can be a problem on some older systems and sometimes people have set a small fixed size for virtual memory and forgotten that they have a limit.

2) Security programs: See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1804
This links to a number of threads with people working through problems.

3) We have several pages on this, starting at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn

4) DEP. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4915#38213

If the above do not resolve the problem then tell us about your computer system, the connection to the Internet (do you have any other problems when using it) and the security programs that you have running on it. (firewall and anti-virus).

Re: Incorrect number of devices shown in my device manager

You don't. Devices can not be deleted, but maintain a historical profile, especially if some had statistics. I lost some on a computer that crashed, but it's no big deal.

For the future, when checking your device manager, be sure to use all devices registered (anytime) and all statistics sent from all devices (anytime) so that the old ones will show up. All device names for your membername must be different.

Re: Incorrect number of devices shown in my device manager

Hello! I haven't posted before. From your post, I see that extra devices aren't a real problem, however I saw a link that says "Reset All Devices To A Single Profile". I clicked on the link where it says to "Reset All Devices To A Single Profile". I got to the screen where it says "Reset All Devices To this Profile" and saved the "Default". When I went back to check and see if there was only one device, I found two devices. Is this link for something other than getting rid of extra devices? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Not really true. I've been running an onsite server and an identical offsite server, both with the same names with the UD and now BOINC agents.

Both were registered separately and I have 2 identical device names showing up under My Grid. I have been keeping a close eye on the stats, especially since moving to the BOINC client as the Device Name can not be modified and it seems that the work units are being processed correctly and results posted to the correct device.

Confusing ??? Yes
Annoying ??? Yes
Problem ??? Doesn't seem to be, but I can't obviously change the name of my server!

Re: Incorrect number of devices shown in my device manager

Hello Heidi Reyes,
There is a Device ID number assigned to each installation of the WCG, so the humanly readable names are not all important. There is no way to merge different devices, so you are stuck with old installations. They just do not get any points. What you did was assign the same profile to all your devices, so they all work at the same times.

Hi! Okay, thanks for the clarification. I won't worry about it.
