PROBLEMS RUNNING ON SBS2003

Hi - new guy: have scanned the FAQs and don't seem to be able to answer a definitive question - does the agent operate on SBS2003? (twin xeon, 1gb RAM and LOADS of disk space)

The information provided in the FAQs quotes only the normal "desktop" OSes, but Ive found quite a few posts mentioning Server 2K and I know my team leader has agents running on all his 2k servers.

When I installed to my server (sitting there gathering dust and the occasional email) - I got the "agent paused" message immediately - following the instructions on the link supplied only resulted in another wu download and "agent paused" again (Deja vue).

Can anyone assist, or is my server destined to a life of 0.1% useage?
crying

Chris

Re: PROBLEMS RUNNING ON SBS2003

Hi Chris,

I don't know of any agents running on SBS2003 but I do know of some running on W2K3 full.

It is more likely to be a thing called DEP. This is a feature called "Data Execution Prevention" which can cause the WCG agent to give the message that you are seeing after the server download.

There is only a workaround at the moment. (I assume that this is the same in SBS 2003 as W2K3, if not, then you will need to check how to configure DEP)

Go to Control Panel-> System-> Advanced-> Performance Settings-> DataExecutionPrevention.

You can either disable DEP for all programs or add the WCG Agent in the list of exceptions. To add WCG Agent as an excpetion, locate the UD.exe program within the install directory, the default being "C:Program Files\WorldCommunityGrid\UD.exe". Click Apply. Then reboot so that the new setting takes effect.

Re: PROBLEMS RUNNING ON SBS2003

It should work

Number of possibilities

It could be the firewall or antivirus scanner you have on. I have experienced problems with McAffee parental controls in the past.

You might not be reaching the minimum spec for a cruncher for F&H which is a 550Mhz device with at laest 250Mb of RAM

or it could be down to an unstable server due to dust in your CPU heatsink or a dodgy memory stick.

Another posibility which I'm not sure is supported on SBS is Data Execution protection a feature that is only supported on the latest Athlon Chip but has been enabled in Win XP service pack 2. This can also cause similar issues.

Let us know how you get on

The more crunchers the merrier

Sam

biggrin Re: PROBLEMS RUNNING ON SBS2003

Stuart

On the button! - Ive had to allow windows services only on the DEP - doesnt seem to like adding the client as an exception (never even considered DEP as a problem on servers!)- and the folding has begun - many thanks.

Server DID require a restart, which COULD be an issue in some business environments (not mine - got to eat lunch sometime!) - so a heads up might be in order to the developers

The controls are, btw, exactly the same on 2k3 as you described them.
