Create a 'WCG Standalone PC Transfer Tool'

I've read many posts by people, including myself, who'd like to see an easier way of facilitating standalone 'non-Internet ready' machines to join in with the number crunching. Many people get authoirty to hook up their work PC's for example, but due to network policy, secuirty etc, the machines are not connected to the outside world.

Has no one (or can't someone) write a basic application to make this process easier? I have some basic programming skills and while not enough to write a full program to do the job, I can't imagine it would actually be that hard to do (from my so far limited knowledge of the software used by WCG). Just design it so that two instances of the application run on both the standalone machine and the Internet connected one, and then just have the standalone 'ask' for data from a source (floppy disk for example) that has been put there by the Internet connected instance of the application that simply asks for new units and sends processed one's to and from WCG.

Just a thought

Re: Create a 'WCG Standalone PC Transfer Tool'

That seems like an excellent idea. Is there anyone to contact, aside from posting in this forum, regarding the software? I have another suggestion, which I will post in its own thread so that its own subject line might catch the attention of the appropriate person; it is "Let partially completed tasks be 'saved' before computer is shut off?" If you have any ideas on that, I'd appreciate your comments there.

Thanks.

Re: Create a 'WCG Standalone PC Transfer Tool'

I just red this morning that there's some kind of way to run WCG without an Internet connection:

It was somethink like copying the entire content of the "WCG-map" to a memory stick, then put the stick into the non-internet machine, and run UD.exe. The application starts to run and will stop again when completed.
You can remove the stick and put it into an Internet computer. Exit a running WCG (if applicable) and run UD.exe from the stick.
The completed task will be uploaded and there will be downloaded a new unit onto the stick.

I'll try if I can come up with the topic, because I'm sure that the above is not 100% correct.

Re: Create a 'WCG Standalone PC Transfer Tool'

Yes indeed - that is the topic that I joined in with myself after I'd posted the 1st message in this thread. I forgot to come back to this one with the link, sorry.

But yes, UDMon is basically the same kind of tool that I was suggesting is created, but I didn't realise then that UDmon existed. But I do now.

In fact, I transferred 10 WU's to my standalone on Thursday which is still crunching away now.

Thanks
