Classification of users.

I joined WCG in April 2005 and am currently showing some 142 thousand points, so I feel that this machine is making a substantial contribution to the work. I have not taken part in the fora before because in twenty years and more of computer conferencing I have long ago learned that when one has nothing to say then that is the best thing to say!
Imagine my reaction then, on posting for the first time in the forum that I was classified a stranger! Can the powers that be not come up with some more positive and welcoming reaction to people posting for the first time!

They could, but that's usually not applicable. 95% of the first time posters are griping about something, unfortunately. A sappy welcome wouldn't solve their problem. Many first time posters are coming in due to the controversy surrounding the Aids thing.

I saw your first message. It looks reasonable enough. The reply looks like it was to something earlier in the thread, not yours. I wondered about the reason for the reply at the time, but not enough to add more. I usually quote a bit of the earlier message I'm replying to if it is not the message immediately above.

Re: Classification of users.

My grumble was not about what somebody else had said, but about the system calling me a stranger!

Re: Classification of users.

Hello Robert Tusler,
'Stranger' et al is the default that comes with mVnForum, as explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/mvnplugin/mvnforum/docs/admin.html
Rank Management

Ranks are a catchy way to categorize forum users based on the amount of their participation. Use the rank management to set the participation thresholds for how many forum posts a user must participate in to achieve a new ranking.

By default, mvnForum installs with 4 ranks, Stranger (less than 20 posts), Newbie (less than 50 posts), Member (less than 100 posts), and Advanced Member (more than 100 posts). You can edit these thresholds and add new ones.

* Edit Rank - Change the minimum number of posts or the title of the ranking.

* Add new Rank - Enter a minimum number of posts and the rank title to create a new ranking.

There is an old thread where people made suggestions for changed names, such as newbie rather than stranger (nobody ever suggested keeping stranger) but nothing has been done. You can find the thread by searching for 'Gabby'. biggrin

Re: Classification of users.

Stranger does sound a bit off-putting for new users. I'll look into changing it into something less offensive.

Thanks,

...especially if they post enough times to lose the classification.

No more Strangers around World Community Grid. We updated the names and thresholds. You can see the info here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=5501

Mucho Gracias!

I like "Cruncher" much better than "Stranger"
