Enhance profiles please

In the Device list you can configure and designate a Useablility Profile to each machine. The problem is that in this profile you are only given two options for each day:
1) Machine available to grid all day, 2) Machine available to grid within specified times (customized).

I think people with a computer at home and at work really need two options for each day... one to cover the times that they are at work and the other the times when they are at home.

For instance, someone working a 9am to 5pm day on a five day week from Monday to Friday may want to define a window from 5pm until 9pm each week day and all day Saturday and Sunday for WCG to run on their work PC, but on their home PC they may chose to only allow WCG work to run during the day while they are at work, ie Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.

Since many peaople have different work patterns I thing it would be better to enhance the profile configurability to allow more flexibility without making assumptions about working patterns... ie we already have a list of profiles to use on our devices, just give us a list of profiles for each day that allows us to define when we want to allow WCG to run. If the scope is set such that daily profiles are below device profiles, some folks will just create say a HOME_PC/WEEKDAY, WORK_PC/WEEKDAY, HOME_PC/WEEKEND, WORK_PC/WEEKEND. Others may have shift patterns that rotate or are less regular so they need complete flexibility.

Cheers,
Nick.

Re: Enhance profiles please

My home computers run WCG 24/7 whether I am there or not.

I found the profile to be too limiting for some of the reasons you mention. Another problem: If you restrict it to certain hours, YOU CAN ONLY DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD during those hours.

I just leave the profile at 24 hours. If you have to turn off your computer, just turn it off. When you turn it on again, the WCG program will pick up again from the last checkpoint. There's not much to worry about.

Re: Enhance profiles please

Nick,

You can create two different profiles for your home and work computers and set each of those profiles to work whenever you'd like during the day. If you create a profile called HOME_PC, you can set it to run from 9am to 5pm on Mon thru Fri. You can also create a profile called WORK_PC and set it up similarly to run when you aren't at work.

The capability you are requesting is already there, and is designed to be easy to use, yet customizable enough for all users.

Unless you are doing processor intensive computing like video editing, music creation, local server hosting, etc... you shouldn't notice a significant drain on your computer's resources anyway. Running World Community Grid while word processing, writing email, and surfing the web shouldn't impact those activities at all.

How do I also tell it not to run at all on Saturday and Sunday when I spend a lot of time on my home PC ? The profile has two radio buttons for each day that either cause wcg to run "Always on" or "Customized'. There is no "Always off" option for any given day.

You forgot Gaming which a lot of people do. As you know, gamers run with all overheads cut to a minimum (and even clock speeds turned up). I also have a local web server running when developing web pages using Dreamweaver as a test server running Apache and MySQL. I do notice a performance hit on my PC when wcg is running... most noticably in the response time.

Regrettably I found the easiest thing to do at home was just uninstall wcg... sad

Re: Enhance profiles please

Hi NickWeavers,
If you right-click on the WCG icon, you can tell the WCG Agent to exit. This stops it from running until you reboot. So games are not a problem. If you do that a lot, you might want to copy a shortcut from Start - Programs - WorldCommunityGrid to your desktop for an easy restart after a game, rather than rebooting.
