AS WE WORK ON OUR COMPUTER WHY CAN'T THE SYSTEM KEEP ON DOING ITS WORK OF FINDING THE CURE ? AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT AFFECT OUR WORK I THINK IT SHOULD GO ON DOING ITS WORK. THAT WAY SIMULTANEOUSLY WORKS WILL BE DONE ON THE SAME COMPUTER - THE WORK PERTASINING TO WCG AND THE WORK PERTAINING TO THE COMPUTER OWNER. HOPE PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY. ANY ANSWER ?

Do you mean as opposed to running in "screensaver" mode?
I imagine that most people do have the project running whilst doing their everyday work. Personally I have never used or even seen the screensaver. I leave the projects running all the time and when not at the pc I turn the monitor off. Perhaps there are some things that are very demanding of resources such as games etc but the most intensive programme I use is Photoshop so I just carry on regardless ![]() |

Hello V.S.S.SARMA and welcome to the World Community Grid.
If you are not running in Screen Saver mode, your system is contributing all processor cycles that are not being used by tasks running on your system. To verify that you are not in Screen Saver mode, click the button with the check mark at the bottom right hand side of the World Community Grid Agent window. At the upper left corner of the window it displays is the text "Run only as Screen Saver". If you do not have that box checked, it will run all the time as I said. Below is a clip from my system and I am not running in Screen Saver mode. ![]() If you wish to verify that the World Community Grid task is using all processor cycles available to it, bring up the Task Manager (right click on the bar at an empty spot in the System Tray bar at the bottom of the screen and then select Task Manager). Then click on the tab at the top that says "Processes" and scroll down until you see one that has an image name that begins with "WCGrid_" (one ends with Rosetta.exe and the other with AutoDoc.exe depending on which project the work unit you are running is from). In the third column under CPU, you will see the percent that your processor is running the World Community Grid application. In the clip from my system below, you will see that WCGrid_AutoDoc.exe is using 97% of my system processor. ![]() I hope this helps you to see that you can contribute all of the resource on your system that you are not using in the work you run on it. |

You sound very knowledgable on computers :) I have noticed that my firewall is being slammed lots in the last day. All the components for the grid are allowed and I have shut off many others that do not need access to the Internet. According to my logs they are coming from all over the place trying to access my network. Is it normal or do we have hackers attempting to hijack a known leak in the grid software? Perhaps yourself or a moderator could help answer this issue.

Hi Dcambly
----------------------------------------What you are seeing on your firewall is sadly on the internet today perfectly normal. I get an email from my router every morning at 5am and every day the log file it sends me is littered with DOS (Denal of Service) attacks. Anyone who has a permanent broadband connection to the net gets hit like this. If you put a vanilla straight out of the box XP PC on the net without any service packs and hotfixes I can vouch for the fact that it will be virus'ed up in less than 20 minutes Now I don't connect to the net until I've applied service pack 2 first. The agent you are running on your PC has to be one of the best, most secure, programs on your computer. I've been running the UD agent for over 7 years of run time here at WCG and over at grid.org, no troubles Rest assured this program's a good one Take care Dave ![]() |
