So if you're still hanging around on this project, where are you on the scale? From "I don't mind" to "I don't care" to "I don't give a darn" to "I don't give a FF" or somewhere else? "I don't mind", BOINC is not just WCG and it has a nice feature called "backup projects", which allow me to configure one or more projects, which kick in once I run out of work for my main project. So currently my CPU is happily crunching for Milkyway and it will simply continue with that until WCG is back one day (or until Milkyway runs out of work / needs maintenance break, whichever comes first ).![]() |

I heard someone mention Orleans .NET recently. Maybe the next migration hop?
----------------------------------------Personally, I was close to buying a Ryzen 9 5950X just to see 16 cores and 32 threads at work. Now I am glad I held off on that. Most of the time I run off solar power and in winter (Southern hemisphere) it was nice to heat the office with computers running WCG. With hotter months coming I might just run the aircon longer instead of generating heat crunching numbers. So, in short - this was a nice eye opener break. |

or if I finally get so frustrated having computers run for 19 days for no reason that I just sell them and quit. There's indeed no reason to have idle computers for 19 days just because WCG is down, there are many other scientifically valuable BOINC projects out there.re-write the darn WCG app using modern software Please don't. Use stock BOINC instead, it just needs to be configured. GPUGRID also recently reverted to stock looking server software. The whole idea with BOINC is that scientists don't need to write all the server software, just configure it. And update every now and than. The more you customize, the more difficult it becomes to maintain.. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Link64 at Sep 19, 2025 8:16:17 PM] |

Interesting opinions above on getting IBM software out of the loop! I've been wondering about this...
----------------------------------------There are [at least] three things to consider when discussing moving away from non-standard wrappers around BOINC.
The current WCG privacy set-up isn't like standard BOINC -- in theory there's no way for typical users to find out who their wingmen are by using the web pages. I think that sort of thing was a requirement for use within corporate environments to be considered (and on occasion users have had forum posts redacted or privileges suspended because they published system names dug out of the APIs!...) If relaxing that privacy level is acceptable, it might be possible to use the standard BOINC web interface as is; however, I'm not sure how well the "hide computers" aspect of standard BOINC would match up to the same requirements (and without knowing someone who has hidden their computers I can't test that for myself; hence the "not sure"...). If relaxing the privacy level isn't acceptable, it might be necessary to tweak the results pages to stop followup on identification of systems, even for unhidden computers One thing I would miss from the current site is the aforementioned API provisions for collecting various user statistics, which are much nicer than having to screen-scrape a web interface! -- I suspect those could be re-implemented alongside standard BOINC, but would they bother? Cheers - Al. [Edit:] P.S. The fact that user-driven problem solving is a lot easier on standard BOINC is a completely separate issue :-) [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Sep 19, 2025 10:29:50 PM] |

21 days dead - sounds rather dramatic.
----------------------------------------Rouxenator, It may sound (and also look) rather dramatic - but thankfully, providing that you've still got the data either waiting to send back (i.e., entries in your 'Transfer' tab) and/or tasks 'Ready to Report' in your 'Tasks' tab, then you won't loose anything. As I;m sure you'll be able to see on the 'Results' page of your account, the 'deadline return date' has been extended - and, I'm sure will be further extended to cover these elongated issues they seem to still be overcoming. Thus, the bottom line is - you haven't actually lost anything. ![]() |

Are you paying a licensing fee to IBM?
----------------------------------------Really should have used this opportunity to dump IBM's MQ Suite and moved to the standard BOINC platform. Would solve a lot of your issues with this proprietary crap from IBM. Edit: I guarantee that if Krembil moved away from IBM's outdated software and went to standard BOINC, that many users who have not donated would donate. I for one will not send any money until that happens, but I would make a nice donation the minute it did happen. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by bluestang at Sep 20, 2025 11:11:41 PM] |

The current WCG privacy set-up isn't like standard BOINC -- in theory there's no way for typical users to find out who their wingmen are by using the web pages. That's not different with standard BOINC, except that users who want to show their computers have the possibility to do that.I think that sort of thing was a requirement for use within corporate environments to be considered (and on occasion users have had forum posts redacted or privileges suspended because they published system names dug out of the APIs!...) This shouldn't be possible, if it is, it's a bug, which needs to be fixed. System names (and IP adresses) must be visible to the owner of the system only and nobody else. Is it the IBM software, that makes this possible or is it a bug in BOINC? If it's the IBM software, than that would be another reason to get rid of it.![]() |
