smile exited with zero status but no 'finished' - beta related? OS Instability? and GPU jobs.

There is a reason why I don't want to post this on the arthritis forum.

--TLDR--
* Is MAM beta causing your PC to become unstable?
* Causing MCM to "with zero status but no 'finished' ?
* Is accepting GPU jobs good idea for a daily use PC (including gaming) with single GPU?
--TLDR--

I restarted my pc a few days ago and roughly two days ago it become instable.

I though it was something else.

But suddenly my gut tells me to check Boinc.

First of all, I noticed a beta MAM, running for more than a day (but it has pause and resume, I presume) will take extra 4 days something, but expiry is tomorrow.

So I aborted it as to not waste any more processing power.

Then I check log and I found this - lots of them,

28/4/2025 5:07:00 PM | World Community Grid | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
28/4/2025 5:07:00 PM | World Community Grid | Task MCM1_censored_censored_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished'

I already Reset the project sadly but query on the result page seems to Valid.

Not sure how much related since I usually just let Boinc running and investigate if there is something strange going on.

Also, as checking the result page, I realized that I was get _1 of the beta, but status shows "Too Late" while the one that I abort, is _0 of the same beta. Was it because _1 was 'too late' so it send to someone else, which is why I'm getting the _0 to become the wingman for the other person getting _1 ?

Anyway will check back if I'm still getting instability issues now that i aborted MAM.

Also, just to ask, if I use the PC for watching movie, playing old (and sometimes new) games, web browsing, watching youtube, is it a good idea or not to accept GPU jobs? Specially if you only have one GPU ( not SLI or dual or more GPU thingy).

I can feel (or maybe the way Krembil works) that CPU jobs are now less and less as GPU become more capable and the language and capabilities it support are improving when compared to yesteryears.

Unlikely. Is it unstable, i.e. are other applications or even the OS crashing? No finished file in BOINC does not mean unstable PC. If it is indeed unstable, check first temperatures and if they are OK, remove any OC and/or undervolting.

* Causing MCM to "with zero status but no 'finished' ?
Again unlikely. But for example your Antivirus might do that if you don't exclude BOINC's data dir from scanning. I had that sometimes too when I was stil using a traditional hard drive. If that was at full load when a WU was finishing it might have caused zero status but no 'finished' file sometimes. In general this message means that the project application wasn't able to write a file in reasonable amount of time, either because of excessive load on the drive (or a failing drive or other hardware "on the way" to it) or because another application like Antivirus pervented this (the MAM application runs in it's own slot dir and even if it's beta, I thing we can safely assume that it is not messing around in slot directories of other applications).

When playing new games probably not, old games you need to test, watching movies/youtube and browsing likely no issue at all when crunching on the GPU (I do that all the time on my iGPU of my Ryzen 5700G). Best way to control this is the <exclusive_gpu_app> tag in app_config.xml , that way you can tell BOINC to pause GPU WUs when some specific applications are running.

I have two tasks that were never going to make it by the deadline despite running 24/7 on a Ryzen9. WCG have been extending the deadlines on these tasks. Mind still show 29th April 2025 as the deadline in BOINC but on the task pages the deadlines have moved back to 2nd May.

This still won't be enough if they are running on some older and slower machines though.
