sad Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

Hello,

I have been providing my computer time for over a year now, and I had also been providing computer time for HIV research, and they have just recently joined up with UD, and when I followed the instructions to install then program...it deleted my old program!

Sooo, I'm at a total loss here...perhaps I've missed something here.

I'm able to go to GRID.ORG, and my stats are still there. Are the 2 programs incompatible, or have they amalgamated into one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated to clear this issue up.

Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

Hi 1mck,
The version of UD.exe used by the World Community Grid to run FightAIDS@Home and the Human Proteome Folding project is incompatible with the version of UD.exe used by grid.org. On a single computer, you can run either grid.org or World Community Grid, but not both.

Thank for the response.

Will there be an amalgamation of the two in the very near future, or is this it? I have given a whole year to cancer research, and then I thought I'd be the nice guy, and give my processor time to HIV as well. I'm a little insulted that this would happen, or that they would not foresee this issue.

At any rate, thank you again for the response.

We are working to get FAAH running on BOINC, initially for Linux, but eventually we expect for Windows as well. That should resolve your problem.

They foresaw it....and one deinstalls the other. It's a well known incompatability and comes up over and over in both this forum and the grid.org forum. It is also possible to read that there has been no new cancer data at grid.org since June 10, 2005, and you have been just running something to keep the computer busy.

It is still possible to run completely different projects at the same time as EITHER WCG or grid.org. This is only one example. DIMES and WCG ... or ... DIMES and grid.org can coexist. DIMES only does something when connected to the net.

Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

The Human Proteome Folding project was shared by World Community Grid and Grid.org so that it could finish in one year. The FightAIDS@Home project will only run on World Community Grid. There are no plans to board FightAIDS@Home to Grid.org.

Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

Hello 1mck,

Here is a site that tries to list all the active distributed computing projects: http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html

And here is the DC Zone, where crunchers chat about some of these projects and post unrestrained views: http://thedczone.com/phpbb2/index.php

Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

Thank you for the response; however, I will no longer be active in donating my processor time, as I find it very disconcerting that I have been essentially wasting my time, and will not waste one more moment on it.

Best regards,
1mck

Re: Where did my UD program go?????????

1mck -I don't think you've been "wasting" your time.. it's just that you referred to the cancer research project. As stated the cancer research project ended. However, I'd assume that you were contribulting to the Human Proteome Folding project -- which is another worthwhile human health/lifesciences project. However, it is not "cancer research" which is why this difference was pointed out.

As to your other question -- this is really to the computing/systems folks and not you -- but I'm *extremely* disturbed that these programs would *uninstall* one another. I can understand *deactivating* but *uninstalling* and *removing* are uncalled for.

I regularly switch distributed computing projects. Sometimes I might *test* one project or another. I certainly would not want a program to delete another thus killing the time put into any given amounts of work currently ongoing! What if I just wanted to "check out" a program to see if it ran well on my computer? Or if I liked it's screensaver format? Or if I *could* run them at the same time?

Something stating "we need to deactivate your other program: XDYXJQR Programmy. Is this okay?" is legitimate and makes sense. Deleting the other program is not. Even if you stated "we are going to delete this program" it would not be a good idea, because I might MISS this notice and then wonder where it went. If you are not upgrading your own program on my computer, you should not be deleting any programs or data on my system. Simply having the program installed on my computer, if not running, should not cause a problem with the other program.
