Now, to add to the stupidity, WCG is aborting ARP tasks because "not started and deadline has passed."
So the downloads that had been done for this task have been wasted. This task had a less than 2 day deadline, so how was that reasonable in the first place given all the problems? What is the management philosophy here? Make the worst possible use of a limited resource? |

Although it doesn't make it better for those who have work cut off like that, it isn't a WCG decision, it's default BOINC server behaviour.
----------------------------------------In fact, the WCG techs went out of their way to put an extended deadline on a significant number of tasks after they had been sent out (and I observed the effects of that for some of my wingmen...) but I don't think they could arrange that for retries, and perhaps they missed some of the short deadline tasks (or those were created after the extension effort took place...). Yes, it's a pain to see work aborted like that (and I'd be very cross if I was on metered internet!), but at least the CPU time that might have been spent doesn't get wasted... Cheers - Al. but I don't think they could arrange that for retries, and perhaps they missed some of the short deadline tasks (or those were created after the extension effort took place. This wasn't a retry. Two of the first three tasks that were sent out were aborted, and the third is showing "No Reply": https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/contribution/workunit/627720511 And if these tasks are so urgent, why not prioritise their downloads? At some stage we have to stop trying to find excuses for what is going on, especially given the terrible official communication and the failure of the measures that were belatedly put in place to solve this. For me, that time is long, long ago. I've set WCG to no new tasks because I just can't be bothered anymore. |

but I don't think they could arrange that for retries, and perhaps they missed some of the short deadline tasks (or those were created after the extension effort took place...). I don't see why not. My main project CPDN when a retry is sent out if the initial task had a 2 month deadline, so does the retread even when the initial one has timed out on the original computer. I don't know which is the default BOINC server behaviour but it is configurable. There is no reason they can't change the default for just the ARP tasks if they don't want to do that for other sub projects. |

Honestly, I'm about to give this project the boot. It says it sent me two dozen tasks on the 5th, and they expire on the 11th and at least 20 haven't even finished downloading. And I've sat in front of my computer several times hitting "retry" only to get maybe 1 a day to finish downloading. I want to work on this project, but they are just wasting my resources and time at this point. Sad, because I waited for new work for quite a while and was excited for the restart news.

I turned on another project to help with the ebb and flow of WCG for the time being. I understand WCG is overloaded and they don't have the resources that IBM had. My presumption is they won't be able to give it the focused time that we all want it to have, which makes sense. They are trying their best with the resources they have and I'll continue to support them (and others).

WUs take so long to download (days!) that I have trouble finishing them in time. ARP is the worst, but it also affects MCM.
----------------------------------------Other BOINC projects have WUs that take at most minutes to download, some download even in seconds. Why not WCG? |
