Roject progress report?

Hi,

It would be nice to have some kind of a project progress bar, e.g. number of received results/number of expected results.

Is it realistic?

Re: Roject progress report?

I'd love that as well.
Would make the whole thing more rewarding to see how far along the whole thing is coming...
Heh... depending on the speed though.
If this proteine thing is going to take another 20 years then I think I'd rather -not- see how slowly it's progressing :)

Yes, Community Grid inundates us with statistics but what I'd really like to see is progress towards project completion. And it's been almost two months since your original posting....

Re: Roject progress report?

As I understand it, its supposed to take at least a year to run this project depending on the amount of members on the grid. Since its only been 6 weeks then I would imagine it would be a few more months before a detailed progress report can be made.

So as long as we all keep crunching and promoting the project to our family, friends and collegues then we continue to make progress!

Keep on crunching! biggrin

Ripcat's right, 6 weeks isn't enough to determine much yet, however, they are planning about 1 more year before they reach completion... keep on crunching!

Re: Roject progress report?

Thank you for your eagerness! Indeed, we will provide progress reports as they are available. Thank you for your patience, and Happy New Year!

We will post overall project progress when we know it.

Keep in mind that there are several factors which currently prohibit us from knowing the overall progress:

  • Really, this is ISB's project. They're the ones that have all the data that will eventually be put onto the grid. Without knowing what this amount is, we can't gague our progress at all. However, we are in contact with ISB to determine what a rough estimate will be.
  • Remember that this is also a joint project with United Devices. The overall progress is a combination of their grid and our grid against the total data that has to be processed. We have to obtain their progress information as well.
  • Finally, we've just begun sending results back to ISB to verify and post-process. It's not simply a matter of sending individual workunit results back. Results from blocks of workunits make up a single result for a single protein. Both us and UD acquire blocks of proteins as we need them to keep our queues full. We must wait until an entire block of proteins are complete before sending them back to ISB for verification and post-processing. This is strictly for logistical reasons.

We should have this information soon. Patience.

Re: Roject progress report?

By my calculations, we are about 20% done as of Jan 7, 2005. Estimated time of completion would be about November of 2005. If WCG gets more participation, the time will be shorter.

I'm going to look into the Linux client so that I can add some more computers to this project. Hopefully the Linux client will run a little faster.

Keep crunching.
