We are excited to announce the launch of our second project, FightAIDS@home in conjunction with the Scripps Research Institute, to help find new drugs to control AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.) You can read all about the project using the Research link on our web page. Our official launch date is Monday, November 21, 2005, but we wanted to have a little head start to iron out any last minute wrinkles prior to the press releases. Your agent will at random receive work units for the new project and for the Human Proteome Folding project as long as your machine meets the minimum system requirements for the given project. You can use your preferences to opt-in or out of any particular projects. Any preference changes take effect the next time your agent returns the result it is processing.
----------------------------------------We set the minimum system requirements higher (250MB RAM and 550Mhz CPU) for the new project because of its considerably larger memory requirement. In addition, because the checkpointing intervals can be rather long on slow machines, this can lead to considerable delays in completing a work unit, especially when the machine is shut down regularly. Therefore, we have set the minimum CPU higher for this project as well. We will attempt to modify the research program to checkpoint more frequently and to use less memory. In that event, we may be able to lower the minimum system requirements. We are sorry for any frustration some members may have over this. In the meantime, you can still contribute to the Human Proteome Folding project and its monumental progress. We plan to launch the Linux version of FightAIDS@home soon. Some finishing touches are required for that, which will take us a few more weeks. For future projects we hope to launch both versions simultaneously. I processed two of these that only ran about 20 minutes apiece and did a lot of docking. A third unit has no docking yet after 25% and one hour. There may be a very wide variation.

The first work units we sent through were very short just to test the system. The average ones should be around 10 hours run time on a 1.8ghz CPU. So depending on your processor speed, it will vary. Also, the work unit difficulties vary somewhat.

I've looked for pertinent comments on these forums and not found them, so...
The announcement of the new project is exciting! Although I know that the Proteome Folding that we have been working on will provide useful information for scientists, it seems so "general" to me. FightAIDS@Home is something we ought to all be able to get our teeth into. Everyone has lost a friend or loved one to this disease! But I also am aware of the enormous profits drug companies make today off existing AIDS drugs. I know I have seen posts before on the HPF project explaining how our grid processing for HPF would result in world-wide good and not just more money for a few commercial enterprises. Now that the AIDS project is underway, I would appreciate similar assurances again. Then, LET'S GET COMPUTING! Thanks. jc |

Hello jlcouch,
In accordance with our charter, all our results become public domain and will be publicly accessible on a database maintained by TSRI. The details will start to become available after TSRI makes its public announcement Monday, 21 November 2005, at 3PM PST (11 PM GMT). We are trying to spot any major problems before the reporters start writing their copy for the California evening news. No problems reported that I have heard of . . . yet. mycrofth |

Mycrofh,
All of my rigs are running AutoDock for the new project, and have been for most of the day. No problems on 2 quads, 2 duals, and my poor little laptop. Memory usage is up, but not really a problem on the big rigs, I increased my swapfile on the LP, and seems to be ok also. I posted this on another thread also. I'm going to keep some informal stats for the next few days, and will post them if it would help. Best regards, and thanks for all your help Rick |
