@ericinboston: Whoa, ~2300 years! I'd be interested in knowing your hardware farm setup. Must be one heck of an electric bill. I'd say @tag me in a thread in the Hardware forum, but this forum software is egregiously obsolete and doesn't support tagging and likely has a ton of security vulnerabilities. I hope to be in a position someday to have hundreds of cores/threads going at it, but I'm lucky to have some quad core machines here and there crunching away. Thanks for the kudos! I will start a new thread tonight in the Hardware forum. Yes, I also wish this forum was far more modern like whatever MacRumors has been using for over 10 years. I work for a very large high street bank in the UK, providing IT support to 3 critical/customer facing systems on a 3 weekly 'on-call' cycle, thus, for the week when I AM on call, I've got my phone with me 24/7, for the whole 168 hours in that week. I can relate to this scenario. For the last ten years before I retired, I was also on-call during any time I was not physically at work. It was not in an IT environment, but in another field. I worked on salary, not hourly and I took the job knowing this was one of the requirements. It can be tiring and stressful, but I thought the job necessities dictated how it was structured. To this day I have a circadian rhythm which follows no predictable rules. It bothers my wife more than it bothers me. However, I still believe that two minutes of communication provides greater benefit to the people affected than keeping them in the dark. Something simple like "We know we are down and will deal with it the next scheduled work day." I am sure this kind of fail safe message could be preprogrammed to execute given certain function parameters. Cheers

In the bank, we try to automate as much as possible - initially to a) auto-recover the service without any human interaction, b) if the service can't be auto-recovered 'in-situ', then for a backup system to automatically take over the service. If that then fails, c) auto-raise an incident ticket and call out the on-call support person without system operations/human intervention, and if all else fails, notify the 24/7/365 system operations team - who are on-site and monitoring/provding cover each and every minute of the day.Now, obviously, the above costs money to do - not only the physcial presence of personnel, but the technical ability/knowledge/capability of the overall system to recognise when 'something is going/has gone wrong' with one or more of the numerous 'moving parts' of, what I'm guessing, is a very complex and technical system. Of course, there will ALWAYS be a 'new' issue that arises (and for which, no contingency has been thought about/put in place), but of course, that's something we, in the bank, always look to prevent/resolve if/when it happens (involving yet more money). So, the cruix of the issue is - money, as that buys the backup hardware/technical skills knowledge and personnel to implement these 'bells and whistles' add-ons which auto-alert/trigger Facebook/X/Forum messages etc. ![]() |

let me add a few words from "the other side" I was also on-call during any time I was not physically at work I can relate to those. More to Sgt Joe. But in IT. It had compensations other than $$$ |
