Why the Change re:Badges?

Why were the color rather than time based name badges removed some time back? It was a lot cooler getting a "bronze" than generic "14 day" or "gold" rather than "90 day" or "diamond" rather than "5 year" badge back in the day and it looked better. Why the negative change? Change for it's own sake isn't a good thing. Some changes are for the bad.

Well, that happened almost two years ago, around the time that the move of WCG away from IBM to Krembil was announced.

The change was done when they redesigned the web site (not sure if IBM or Krembil was responsible for that), but the person(s) doing this was most likely some UX'er, who didn't do any crunching work, hence didn't understand the well established logic in the increasing "value" of the colors of the badges and instead just decided to use some esthetic pastel colors to "fit the corporate look". Certainly, beside the loss of some simple functionality in some other place. one of the most stupid moves that could have been made.
And since the supposed to be restart of WCG under Krembil/UHN has been marred with many setbacks, this issue has unfortunately taken a distant backseat in the priorities.

Re: Why the Change re:Badges?

The unappealing change to the current badge color scheme happened before the transition from IBM. At the time, I posted a suggestion to return to colorful badges with the reasoning that they are more appealing to the eye and thus more motivational. The response from the IBM team was that it had been in the planning for a "long time" as a transition to a "modern" user interface style and would not be changed again before the transition to Krembil. We can only hope the Krembil team will be open to reassessing the color scheme after the many transition issues have been resolved.

I second every single sentence of this posting.

Re: Why the Change re:Badges?

I suspect another reason for the changes was that more colours were needed. However, I am still using the old colours in my spreadsheet forecasting when my next badges will occur. I extended the old sequence to 2,000 years using the light and dark which has been used in the current system, but much more appealing to the eye.

Copies available on request.

Re: Why the Change re:Badges?

I also agree with everytihng that's been said already in this thread - MUCH prefer the 'old' style badges, and I still refer to them when I reach each level (wihch, is few and far between nowadays, as I've done all the 'easy' levels and now on the long slow slog to 10 years (or 5 for ARP).
Also, I strongly suspect that those with colour blindness, would appreciate a return to the brighter colour scheme.

Re: Why the Change re:Badges?

I agree too with everything said and I'm colourblind. For me differences in brightness in colours are visible, but different colours have the same brightness (an orange on a green lawn is hard to spot for me).
The old badges worked far more better for me ... although ... the bronze and emerald were difficult for me to extinguish, but I will not complain about that if they might ever return.

Re: Why the Change re:Badges?

Hi everyone,

The badges were carried over from the IBM-designed system and fulfill their intended purpose for the time being. We appreciate your feedback, and I have passed it along to the rest of the WCG team.
