Research update from the MCM team (April 2023)

The MCM team?s research into lung cancer biomarkers has identified 26 genes that are present with top scores across all the signature sizes considered. This update focuses on a potential biomarker gene called FARP1, which is linked to lung cancer metastasis.

Thank you!

Very interesting read, even though as a layman, I do not understand the significance of the findings. However, I do understand that it is a step forward.

Re: Research update from the MCM team (April 2023)

I run several systems with only one being Windows, the rest various flavors of Linux. I also occasionally look at how well the systems are functioning with the various projects. It has already been established that Linux systems run much more efficiently with the VINA application which SCC uses. I also noticed the Windows system runs much more efficiently with MCM. I don't know if they have changed how MCM runs recently , but the duration on the Windows system seems to have decreased. At this point I have all the Linux systems running SCC and the Windows system running MCM. Two of my systems are roughly comparable, the Windows system is an I7-3770 and one of the Linux systems is an I7-2600. The Windows system is about twice as fast as the Linux system on MCM and the opposite is true for SCC. Not an exact comparison I know, but I do try to put resources where they will do the best job.
Cheers

Re: Research update from the MCM team (April 2023)

Hello . I'm medical doctor from Argentina, and actually have 3 of our compouters giving time (and some energy) for this work . As a non rich Country ,our health System and our patients is under a big financialstress - All the new drugs or new diagnosis test , new markers , represent an enourmus increment in the cost.
I have a question with all my respect with your work . I assume that any new molecule discovered and probe to be medically ussefull in any way can let to profit for the owner . In the case of this search about new molecules , they are let in Pblic Domain? , or they remain in a propietary status that let owners with new royalties? . Are there any financial benefit for the countries that contribute with the search effot, even the small one to let an unused computer to do the job ?

Hi equinteros and welcome to the WCG forums! As our About Us page states, all work done is open science, open data, meaning all work completed through WCG volunteering is published to the public. There is no financial benefit to volunteering and neither we nor our partners earn any revenue from results found by volunteers. I hope that answered your questions.

Re: Research update from the MCM team (April 2023)

This is wonderful! Really appreciate the graphics and video here, and congrats on both the FARP1 and VAMP1 finding.

Searching around, I'm seeing that there are 7 2023 publications and 19 (wow!) 2022 publications from the Jurisica lab. Do you know which ones volunteers on the MCM project contributed to? Wondering if there's anything to refresh for the BOINC site too.
(Obviously it takes time to finish computation and publish, so what we are crunching today probably isn't published yet).
