It gets rebooted regularly because the machine shuts down spontaneously several times per week, primarily when running Einstein or Milky Way tasks. Check for memory errors with memtest or similar, look for bulging/leaking capacitors, check PSU. At that age consider retiring it for a newer, more power efficient PC. Paul.

158 F degrees is your max. Along with what PMH_UK said above, a better CPU fan.
I recently had the same kind of problem and it was bulging/leaking capacitors. Need to change the motherboard unless you can unsolder and solder. UGH. Had another same problem in early WCG days and it was the fan. The better idea is new PC. You know that even brand new machines are not meant to go 24/7/365 @ 100% CPU I have better fans on all |

You know, I would not buy a brand new PC from any store. They are low-price driven for the general public who will just surf, read email, look at videos and do some work once in a while.
You built yours from parts at Tiger Direct. Do it again. You will have a better machine at probably the same cost. There are plenty of users here who can help. |

I might just have to bite the bullet and get that one. I'm leery of refurbished computers. Anybody have good experience with a refurbished one? I have had good luck with used workstation and server class systems. They are built to run 24/7 and have all held up for many years for me. I do take the covers off once a year and blow out the dust bunnies. So far they have never overheated for me, nor have I lost a fan. The down side is they are noisy, especially when starting up, but once they are running they are not too bad. They can also be bulky, not so bad with towers, but the rack mounted ones are heavy. This not to say they won't eventually have some hardware issue. Cheers

Last year I installed a Thermaltake 600 watt power supply. One would think that should be sufficient. No?

Thanks to all you guys for your thoughtful replies to my dilemma.
Twelve years ago I bought three computers from Polywell Computers, a small company in California run by a bunch of young Taiwanese guys. They were highly rated by PC Magazine. Waiting for a quote from then now. I will consider another Bare Bones kit from Tiger Direct. |

Last year I installed a Thermaltake 600 watt power supply. One would think that should be sufficient. No? That should be indeed enough unless you forgot to mention some additional GPUs in your first post, this APU has a TDP of 65W, even a 300W PSU would be more than enough. Anyway, if you have one spare laying around, I'd try it (or try this PSU in different computer), even new PSUs can be not completely OK and cause some weird errors. Did the shutdowns start with the previous PSU or after you installed the new one? Another possibility is overheating, but that should actually not cause shutdowns, just downclocking, but that might also depend on the mainboard. Anyway, if you decide to buy new hardware, make sure to buy cooler which can easlily keep the CPU/APU well below it's max. temp, the one you have choosen here is obviously not able to cool this APU, specially not for 24/7@100%. Or you need to replace the thermal paste after all those years, I did that recently on my Core2Duo and the fan could spin few hundred (!) RPMs lower to keep same temperature. Like it was sugested in the thread before, try to run fewer concurrent WUs, so you don't hit the temperature limit and see if the shutdowns stop. That's the easiest thing to try and if they stop, you can start from there and see, when issues arise. [Edit 4 times, last edit by Link64 at Dec 6, 2022 12:43:09 PM] |

I will consider another Bare Bones kit from Tiger Direct. Then you are almost done. I presume this machine is only doing Boinc related projects 24/7. If not then just ignore this post. All you need is a motherboard, memory, a CPU, and yes, like above, a better cooler. The box you have will do. All my machines are like this, older cases with those 4 important parts replaced and a cheap VGA video card. I did not know the state of the PSU. Now I know. 600W. You just need to spec them out. A brand new older type motherboard and new memory. Make sure the board has 4 slots so you can upgrade memory if need be. Then you can get a pre-owned CPU from Ebay. You know your budget. Load up Ubuntu, the WCG client and GO. I'm a Windows guy but went with Ubuntu. Get the LTS (Long Term Support) version 20.something. [Edit 2 times, last edit by BobbyB at Dec 6, 2022 5:10:41 PM] |

Now the count is 23 tasks computation errors, three valid and one validation pending.
This is not happening with my other projects: Milky Way, Asteroids, Rosetta, Universe. Einstein does cause the computer to shut down for some reason. But none others are resulting in errors. I don't have another desktop to test this PSU, but I do have a spare PSU I could put in this one. I'll take out the hard drive, put in an external box and take this machine to the electronics recycling place. Pretty sure I am gonna build a new computer from parts I am getting specs on. An AMD Ryzen i7, 32 GB of DDR4s, Mother board, 1TB SSD, 500watt PSU, case, fans.I figure it will cost less than $650 and be at least as good as any costing more than double that. |

I don't have another desktop to test this PSU, but I do have a spare PSU I could put in this one. Do that, if the computer shuts down with the spare PSU, than the current PSU is OK and I'd recommend to keep it as well, always good to have a pile of spare PSUs, specially when running 24/7.case, fans If you buy a new case, make sure to buy a good, air flow optimized case with air filters. A case that has to be open for propper cooling is just crap.[Edit 2 times, last edit by Link64 at Dec 8, 2022 2:26:23 PM] |
