Given a choice of clients....

Now the Linux agent is here, I have a dilemma.

Having a number of dedicated boxes running WCG agent 24/7, and ignoring commercial / usability aspects, is there any advantage of one version over the other?

I don't want to start a Linux vs. Windows debate, but the question really boils down to.... given the same WU, which agent will crunch it most effectively? And if there is a significant difference, is this just due to o/s efficencies of fundamental agent differences?

The computation portion is essentially the same. The Windows version gives you the graphics image and screensaver while the Linux version does not yet provide that. Running the graphics image reduces the amount of CPU available for the real work by a few percent.

But the graphics aren't rendered when they aren't viewed are they?
I'd like to know too wich OS gives better performance. You see it on every project that there are some performance varieties on different OS's. I assume it's the same in here. Unfortunate i haven't tested out linux yet so i can't make a comparison.

Re: Given a choice of clients....

You are right, Pconfig.

The graphics only eat up cycles if you bring up the graphics view in the Agent or run the screensaver. Other than that, the differences between OS versions should come down to OS calls (trivial, several milliseconds here and there) and the efficiency of the compiler. That last one might be noticeable. Although Linux has many fans, most people feel that the gcc compiler is not highly optimized. There has been no comment from the staff about which compiler (and math library) has been used for each version.

Anyway, my personal opinion is that the application speed will depend on compiler and library issues rather than on OS.

Re: Given a choice of clients....

The only way of knowing for sure would be to test the same WU on the same PC, once under Linux and once under Windows.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how this could be accomplished I'd give it a try....

Jonathan.

Re: Given a choice of clients....

Personally I think windows can be pretty lean if one disables unnecessary services etc.

Hm yeah that's what i meant. Think i'm going to try out linux this or next week and then try to check out wich one is fastest.
