https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/MasterUrl hasn't been updated for 9 years, and newer constructs like <web_url> have been added since then. Use with caution.

The Grumpy Swede and I have been continuing to explore this behind the scenes. One additional point of interest:
A BOINC server is largely defined by a file on the server called, simply, config.xml The full documentation is in https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ProjectOptions: I strongly suspect that the misconfiguration message is being generated (in our clients) by a discrepancy between the entry in https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ProjectOptions#dirs, and the configuration report returned by get_project_config.php |

Thank you for your analysis of the master_url issue, Grumpy Swede. The scheduler was indeed misconfigured. Unfortunately, the problem took a while to sort out because one or two WCG system design details in my head were also misconfigured.
Both corrected now, I think. BOINC clients should no longer complain that "This project is using an old URL." Christian |

Very good Christian, works like a charm. If you have the latest recommended BOINC version (For Windows v7.16.20) it will automatically recognize the change from http to https, and change it by itself. It will show in the Event log the following also: "Project URL changed from http:// to https://" This should actually work from BOINC v7.16.11, where it was first introduced.
----------------------------------------Those with earlier versions will if they have the "old" http address set in BOINC, now instead for the master. nag see this: This project is using an old URL. When convenient, remove the project, then add https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ The easiest solution for those with older BOINC versions, connected to WCG with the "old" http adress, is therefore to upgrade to the latest recommended version. Edit, added: But all bets are off for the automatic change to https, if you fell for the message about removing the project, and then added the project again with https://master.worldcommunitygrid.org/ . I don't think the automatic change will work if you did that. [Edit 6 times, last edit by Grumpy Swede at Jul 12, 2022 8:45:35 PM] |

Again, see post 673793 (earlier in this thread).
----------------------------------------It depends how you attach. If you use the BOINC Manager wizard, you'll be fine: get_project_config.php is returning a usable value. It's still returning <master_url> http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ though, so you'll need to be running at least v7.16.11 for the auto-adjust to work. But if you use one of the manual mechanisms for attaching, take care. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Richard Haselgrove at Jul 12, 2022 9:33:56 PM] |

Yeah, get_project_config.php should also return the https value, shouldn't it?
----------------------------------------BOINC easy, and "set and forget", no way it is. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Grumpy Swede at Jul 12, 2022 9:40:58 PM] |

I upgraded my boinc (minor upgrade, not worth the bother until now). I deleted and readded WCG. I saw the https: but it didn't stick. still getting the attached twice error.
not sure if it is important... but thought I'd report it... I'm on MacOS |

I upgraded my boinc (minor upgrade, not worth the bother until now). I deleted and readded WCG. I saw the https: but it didn't stick. still getting the attached twice error. Yup - it seems that the account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file downloaded still has the http master_url value, whereas sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml has the https value!not sure if it is important... but thought I'd report it... I'm on MacOS As an experiment, I "sacrificed" one of my systems by stopping BOINC, patching both the account XML file and the <project> entry for WCG in client_state.xml (just in case...) to reflect the new URL and restarting BOINC. As one might hope, the "attached twice" message no longer appears! (But as there doesn't seem to be any work at present I don't yet know if it's a true fix...) I don't actually recommend hacking on BOINC files :-) -- too much can go wrong! -- but I wanted to check... Hopefully, getting the account XML file to have the https URL is a trivial fix... Cheers - Al. P.S. Note to WCG staff -- this was raised in a thread in BOINC Agent Support around about the time I suspect the other fix was applied! (adriverhoef and Unixchick were early reporters...) [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Jul 12, 2022 11:41:19 PM] |
