Re: WCG Data Transfer Underway, Stress Test of New Infrastructure Scheduled For Feb 28th

The work units sent out before Feb 14 will have enough time to complete and will be accepted until Feb 27,.
After the current servers are powered off all the updates and communications will be posted on the simplified WCG website and will be cross-posted on WCG Facebook and Twitter pages. The volunteers will be sent email notifications when the normal functions restart.

That's a grim view. I would hope the Krembil Cancer Center staff would support this project with the same urgency that we do.

That's more than unfair - they've made it clear they do care, that they did NOT want to take this path, but have little choice. Dr. Jurisica himself said:

"In an ideal world, you are absolutely right, the switch-over would be smoother; but, we are running our of time, and thus it is prudent to go to plan B, as we do not have extra time for the test before the move,"

2 months downtime is nothing, in the life of a Galapagos tortoise, smile

I'm not worried about it, I'm not disappointed in any way. It is what it is, and it's perfectly fine with me.

On the positive side will we be given a warning via email when the project will be about to start up again whether it is before or after the projected date?

Just set priority for WCG at 100% and for Rosetta at 0%.

That way it will run Rosetta when no WCG work is available.
Once work is available for WCG it will start accepting it and give it priority.

Question to the WCG team: When on the 14th of February, will you stop sending out new work (in UTC time) ?

Re: WCG Data Transfer Underway, Stress Test of New Infrastructure Scheduled For Feb 28th

I am as well a little surprised by the pre-announced downtime.
Hopefully, it will not kill the volunteering dynamic. I am afraid that many contributors will not come back when the platform will be back.

Two weeks will remain a long time but acceptable in some way.
Two months - from a business point of view - is a no-go. The demotivation of members should be considered as a (medium to high) risk, like any other "business" risks.
The longest downtime we experienced long time ago was during the move to a new data centre: it took less than 2 days.
If it is not too late, please reconsider your approach; at least keeping the platform alive, even with limited functionality and operation.

Good luck,
Yves

Hopefully, I will have one day the chance to achieve the 500 years milestone and some others on project level. Honestly, I do not feel very comfortable after reading this news.

Two weeks ago, I reached 15 years of active contribution without any interruption. Finally this announcement is really disappointing.

This has me wondering also. I have these 4 machines set up to do Boinc work. I am now looking for a temporary home as are lots of others I presume. Will they come back?

Re: WCG Data Transfer Underway, Stress Test of New Infrastructure Scheduled For Feb 28th

At the very least, the placeholder, downtime page should have a way to sign up for a text message blast as soon as the project is back online.

Yes, our computers will reestablish a connection right away. But the vast majority of donors aren't regular forum users - we're just a sample.

The people who come to WCG for the first time and see a placeholder website won't be back in two months.
And the people who replace their computers may not remember to manually add WCG to their project list in several months.
