This is suggesting that something is somehow connecting somewhere and figuring out your IP and then blocking something and this after the OS has booted and taken over the machine. I say after boot because it is easy to boot without a public facing IP by disconnecting the Ethernet cable or the WiFi. You will then get a 169.254 dot something IP. Now where are you?
----------------------------------------Or is Windows complicit in this? How about the million and one flavours of Linux? Explain why. I presume your IP. What about VPN or TOR? [Edit 6 times, last edit by BobbyB at Jul 28, 2021 9:40:04 PM] |

I suspect this ban is because of the computers' poor energy efficiency during various sleep or standby modes, not the main energy consumption when it's fully running.

That is a part of it, but only the beginning.
In California one will soon be limited as to what type of screen one can get. The restrictions will be getting quite vast. Today, they will not sell anyone a pre-built to be shipped anywhere in California that does not have a Gold Rated 800w power supply, or less. Soon it will basically be limiting out any Intel i9 or Ryzen equivalent. |

No joke, or it's a sad joke...
That the state of California will actually use hardware identification to get you. Even trying to hide behind any variation of a VPN; they will still have full access to the trace logs, and (more importantly) through ones internet provider. |

I'm sorry guys, but this is all nonsensical to anyone who works with technology and sounds like a badly-written Hollywood hacker movie. You can dislike their particular energy efficiency standards that are causing difficulties in ordering certain hardware but let's not make it more than it is. ![]() |

Soon it will basically be limiting out any Intel i9 or Ryzen equivalent. I can see them easily doing this. They do it with cars already. So I guess you need DIY PCs if you want to crunch using the high end CPUs.That the state of California will actually use hardware identification to get you. Even trying to hide behind any variation of a VPN; they will still have full access to the trace logs, and (more importantly) through ones internet provider. Expand on this. How would this work? Which trace logs from your ISP? I know people can be sneaky and I like to know exactly how.Your router gets it WAN IP from the ISP going through the modem. It's just a router (well it's more than just that) and each PC gets its LAN IP from it. I've sat outside a router sniffing traffic and it's only internet traffic. In the early days it was all open; passwords and all. Today with all the encryption in the protocols (https, ssl, tls, dns over https) you can hardly read anything from the packets except destination IP and with VPN everything in the packet is gibberish except the VPN IP. Now if the VPN is covert well ..... TO: Acibant I was getting to your point through precise questions. [Edit 3 times, last edit by BobbyB at Jul 29, 2021 3:59:16 AM] |

Tracking through a VPN.
Referencing Snowden in general, also very much referencing Rob Braxman Tech. Almost all VPNs that at any point go into or through america are logged. Hardware IDs are always stored at various internet providers (and other "organizations") throughout america. Also reference, James Bramford - The Shadow Factory. As to how it works. My apologies, I'm not really sure how it work - but unfortunately it does work. But also to stress, it does work in multiple ways. |

Agreed all traffic eventually goes through America but Hardware IDs?? I'm not biting. Your MAC never leaves your router.
----------------------------------------If running Windows then Microsoft has a fingerprint of the machine so it can validate the licence and they know how many licences I have in the house. All that is encrypted as it flows to Redmond. I know this for a fact. I had to rebuild a PC from scratch (bad disk) and the install was validated. No code no nothing to enter. It just knew. It's linked to the motherboard which defines the unique machine this OEM copy is allowed to run on. If using a VPN then double encryption to the VPN from you. What does the VPN know? Your IP and a destination IP. If it's a big site like CNN then they know by the IP but if it's to the millions of sites on Godaddy et al who serve many sites on 1 server then which site and which page? Snowden uses TOR so if he feels comfortable with it then so do I. I'm always talking here of non compromised off-the-shelf equipment and stuff. If you're a big target then who knows but to do it at large like you and me and all reading here no way. We are not targets. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Jul 29, 2021 5:45:29 PM] |

If anyone is interested, GamersNexus has just produced an in-depth video covering what is going on here. Sadly a lot of websites engaged in clickbait when it basically boils down to OEMs like Dell needing to use 80 Plus Gold power supplies or better. It's 20 minutes long but sometimes getting informed on a topic requires more than just looking at a headline.
