Re: Pre built computer hardware

Thank you for your answer, but what I meant to say is where in the operating system does it read and record what type of power supply I have?

I know the back out chips have been required since the Clinton years, but how does your system identify what power supply you have???

The simple answer is that nothing is reported to the operating system from your power supply. This can lead to situations where someone who has built their own computer and didn't get one with enough wattage discovers that the computer shuts off every time they put a load on the system. Each component has its maximum power draw and assumes you will provide it with sufficient power with no consideration of what else is installed in the system.

Re: Pre built computer hardware

Newer power supplies are reporting this information through a USB interface but the user chooses to connect the cable or not.

Re: Pre built computer hardware

The power supply information/data is in the operating system and is also i bios. More importantly, it is also in the drivers. With higher end systems it is also in the "monitoring and controlling" third party software.

Try NZXT Cam software for proof on that one.

Also as mentioned earlier... It does pull it from usb. It also pulls it from items such as error codes (blue screen codes). If lack of a proper power supply is generating error codes, that information is being "sent back" in the error code data, which... Guess what - is through the operating system

Re: Pre built computer hardware

If that information is in the OS and BIOS, how did it get there? How did the OS and BIOS interrogate the power supply? There aren't any data connections unless the customer or vendor connects the USB port to the motherboard. Server power supplies are another matter altogether. They connect into the motherboard a different way and are intended to provide their information to the system for monitoring purposes in Enterprises. The consumer grade power supplies aren't normally setup for that automatically. Voltages and Amperages are probably derived from sensors on the motherboards not from the power supply.

Re: Pre built computer hardware

Nobody here was excited for premade Dell systems before they knew their power supplies were illegally low quality.

The fantasies about tricking Dell and environmentalists in California with VPNs all to get your hands on something none of us would recommend seems like a spiteful own-goal. Why live your life with that much resentment?

Re: Pre built computer hardware

Exactly my point..
I asked the question in case something has come out that I don't know about.
I have been building and repairing computers since 1980 ( including main frames for the air force ) and couldn't think of any way the system could get the power supply information unless some type of "smart card" has been added to them.

Voltage and current ( thereby wattage ), frequency from noise, p.s. resistance and possibly inductance could be read from a motherboard if specifically built to do so.

Though I have never heard of anything but servers and mainframes having any of these capabilities.

Re: Pre built computer hardware

Tin foil hats anyone?

If you start throwing out wild claims like 'I know Snowden' and 'General whatshisface' told me you just come across like some kind of loon.

Alex Jones would be proud

Re: Pre built computer hardware

Snowden was at my Wedding. Have plenty of photographs of Snowden at my wedding.

General Hayden was his boss, and also a close neighbor to me.

As an american I'd like to thank you for letting america park out hardware in your country; especially the NBC
