A couple of my computers running WCG are sitting way over there in the corner (pointing across the basement) and I seldom log onto them. Every once in a while, Microsoft reboots them and I don't know about it until I happen to notice they are not sending work units anymore. They start again when I sign on and/or dismiss the "wouldn't you like to enhance your Windows experience" nag screen, usually aborting a half dozen or so tasks that have expired.
If I I set up boinc to run as a service, will it start automatically when the computer reboots and nobody is signed-on? (I assume it can still be installed as a service even tho' that's not the default) |

If you want to have them run without the constant update hassles, find a Linux distribution. Once installed and running it is as close to run and leave alone as you can get. It sounds like you are not using these machines for anything Windows specific anyway.

BOINC installed as a service will start with the computer even if nobody has logged on. Reinstalling it is easier than installing a new operating system. Note that the service install cannot perform GPU work.

Yes, my one Windows machine restarts by itself and starts doing WCG. (as a service)
Another thing I did was make sure it does no ARP since it can lose many hours of work depending of the last checkpoint for ARP. What use to bug me was that I set it to never boot by itself without asking but it seems to have a mind of its own.... or there is a conspiracy to... |

It is (was) possible to set Windows to log on a user at boot.
----------------------------------------That way can do GPU work. Paul.

There are some work arounds in windows 10. If you go to update and security you can pause updates for up to 35 days so it doesn't unexpectedly restart. After that you would have to manually update or it will do it for you. Also, after an automatic update and restart, you can have it go back to what it was doing by changing the settings in "accounts", "sign-in options". Scroll down to toggle the "restart apps" automatically and "use my sign in info to automatically finish setting up my device after restart".
I just found these options myself and started using them. It would be nice to have more control over the updates but working with what we got here. |

Not going to install a new OS; one of them is the one I do my taxes with and Tax Cut software claims it does not run under Wine and there's no Linux version. I actually had Linux on it until I hit that problem. The other is owned by my employer for use as a backup system. It has Windows 10 Enterprise and I can't schedule the updates (other than install them right now)
----------------------------------------Sounds like reinstalling boinc as a service might work. (I thought it would) The company laptop has a graphics card, but it's an old pathetic one and I'm not sure it ever does any GPU work. (the processor is a good one and it crunches really well) The personal laptop has a much newer processor but just integrated graphics, so it can't run GPU tasks anyway. I'll also play with the sign-in options. Thanks. I hadn't heard of that setting. [Edit 1 times, last edit by zxcvbob at Jul 20, 2021 4:59:54 AM] |

It sounds like you are constrained by some circumstances beyond your control. It looks like installing as a service is the way to go. As for your employer's machine, better make sure the employer is on board because employers can get pretty picky about what runs on their machines.

Cheers My employer, who shall remain nameless but you can probably figure them out, fully supports WCG and has the install media on their corporate apps page. :) |

In Window Update you can change the settings so that you can download updates automatically but choose when to reboot your machine. This is particularly useful when running ARP with its infrequent checkpoints.
With ARP you could then wait until a unit passes 12.5% or multiples thereof before rebooting. You then get the updates installed and don't lose any crunching. If crunching more than one ARP (maximum half your threads) then suspend each as they get to a checkpoint until all have and then reboot. After reboot then resume the ARP units. While they are suspended, you could be crunching extra other project units. Mike |
