Minimum CPU requirements?

I can't find an answer to this in the help files. Under System Requirements it says nothing that helps me.

What is the minimum instruction set required, or what are the earliest AMD and Intel CPUs to be supported?

I'm about to set up systems (primarily for testing CPUs in my collection, but hopefully also to crunch on). The basic specs are:

Intel socket 775 - Support SSE4.1
Intel socket 1156 - Support SSE4.1 + 4.2
Intel socket 1155 - Support AVX
Intel socket 1150 - Support AVX2
Intel socket 1151 - Support AVX2
AMD socket AM2 - Support SSE4a
AMD socket AM3 - Support SSE4a, some support AVX

I'll be setting up those that can crunch differently to those that can't (better cooling, more RAM, etc)

All of those cpu's should support the projects on WCG. I would just put BOINC on all of them and see how they perform. Some may be too slow to be worthwhile for you. All of the projects here are cpu bound and will use 100% of the cpu if you allow that.
Cheers

Re: Minimum CPU requirements?

Thanks. For crunching purposes, I'll be using a high end CPU for each socket, so hopefully it'll be worthwhile. In summer, most of my electric comes from solar panels, in winter, crunching (and folding on GPUs) will contribute toward my heating :)

Re: Minimum CPU requirements?

I'll say the same as above: "Some may be too slow to be worthwhile for you". Yes they will work but not that much.

There is a thread in the hardware forum, which I started, where I make a case for bigger "monsters" as opposed to lots of tiny workers. It's about Raspberry PIs when I started to be interested in them. It went off topic. I retired an old Lenovo T400 from what I learnt from that thread.

OK power is no problem for you but what about the space and noise not to mention the heat in summer for all these machines. I interpret your posts to mean that you do NOT have the high end CPUs and RAM (and the rest) for these motherboards. Maybe you have a basement full of old junk like I use to have so it's no problem.

Don't know the specs for all the sockets you list but recognise AM2 and socket 775 which are old and not worth spending money on. I have old machines too (not on WCG) but only to test stuff with. This is how I started with WCG.

I went that route. Update this then that then fix this then that. Klunkers are klunkers. Finally I went with a "monster" motherboard/CPU with older peripherals.

I would start with the higher end sockets first. Good luck.

A lot of us have crunched on systems like those you have mentioned here. I think you will find that in general, the newer cpu's do better than the old ones, no surprise there. As for different instruction sets not much gain will be had as the projects here don't really take advantage of such things.

Good luck in your testing and if you find anything of interest be sure to share with us.
