Windows run time longer

There seems to have been a change in the work units. They used to run about the same time on either my Win10 or Ubuntu 20.04 machines, being less than two hours on a Ryzen 3600 for example.

But now the Win10 machine runs about 5 1/2 hours, and the Ubuntu machine a little over 2 hours. I haven't seen an announcement of any changes that would affect it, but I may have missed something.

Re: Windows run time longer

Hello Jim
Hmm, that seems a bit puzzling.
My Win10 Ryzen 5 3600 has been taking 1.5-2 hours on OPN1 tasks. I've just re-started MCM following comments from Knreed in another thread, and those tasks have been taking 1.25-1.5 hours.

Mark

PS Thank you for your suggestion elsewhere about using PrimoCache. I've been trying it out for the last couple of days - excellent!

Re: Windows run time longer

You are welcome. I think you will see the change mainly on work units downloaded in the last 24 hours. I keep a short buffer (0.1 + 0.5 days), and see the changes quickly.

Re: Windows run time longer

This is puzzling. I restarted MCM on 11 June and run 24/7. My buffer is 0.1 + 0 days and, since I restarted, I still haven't seen an MCM task take longer than 1 hr 45 mins and the vast majority are taking under 1 hr 30 mins (according to my BoincTasks history).

The 7 MCM tasks I have running at the moment all look set to finish in a similar timeframe.

Re: Windows run time longer

MJH333,
Thanks. That is the feedback I am looking for. I will detach and try again later.

But I see on my Linux machine that a few have changed back from 2:14 to 1:48, which is their normal time. In fact, they seem to be alternating. I think they sent out a small batch with longer run times.

Re: Windows run time longer

Hi :)
I'm not an expert but I remember reading in the project's early news a couple years ago that new work units (I suspect they mean whole batches) will be created based on the other results (I suspect batches). So I'd assume that the program building the WUs analyzes, say, 50 batches and has the next batch(es) focus on traits that seem significant. Maybe that could explain the variability in computation time.
I only run 1 Windows machine but I see it too, sometimes 2 hours 15 minutes but occasionally I get some that run for 3,5 hours.
Take care!

Re: Windows run time longer

Amalthea,

I looked though the old news to a point, but missed that one. Yes, it could explain it. I think I will do them on Linux. That seems to be more consistent. The actual run times don't matter to me otherwise. Probably it has to do with the data size and how it is accessed. Thanks.

Re: Windows run time longer

During the last couple of weeks, I noticed about 30-40% variability for the computation time on both Windows (7) as well as Linux. I suppose that it is directly related to the science itself.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Windows run time longer

I'm seeing 40% faster runtimes on Windows than on Ubuntu 20.04.

Windows - 2+ hours, Ubuntu - 3.5+ hours

Is this normal? I recently switched to MCM from MIP. Haven't been crunching MCM for a long time.

Re: Windows run time longer

I am also seeing a 40 to 50% faster time on Windows 7 vs. Linux Mint 18 on MCM. The Windows machine is a I7-3770 and Linux Machine is a I7-2600K both at stock. Not a direct comparison I know, but on most projects the 2600K has been faster than the 3770 until running the current batches of MCM. The 2600K is about 30 to 40% faster on ARP.
Cheers
