Re: Work unit availability

I could do that if I was only interested in keeping my GPU busy.
I am doing this project because I am interested in contributing to the efforts against COVID. Largely due to the fact that my significant other nearly died from it, and has been fighting it for a month now.

I wish your significant other the best of luck.

Thank you. She seems to be having some improvement just in the last few days. Just a bit, but any light at the end of the tunnel is great at this point.

Re: Work unit availability

Thank you to the volunteers in this thread who have posted questions, answers, or comments directly related to the science and technology of GPU work units and OPN.

I've just had to edit a number of posts for borderline obscene references. There are also multiple posters who are derailing the thread with an ongoing argument that is making it difficult for others to find information about work unit availability.

Going forward, anyone who posts words or phrases that are obscene or borderline obscene, or who repeatedly engages in argumentative behavior (as opposed to a calm, professional discussion) will have their posts moderated and will not be able to post directly to the forum.

Re: Work unit availability

I'm seeing the same thing too. The good thing is that the average credit granted also goes up. biggrin

The extra minute or two longer on my card wouldn't affect the availability unless it takes almost half a day to complete a single task like what is in gpugrid right now. (Honestly this is a lousy comparison but just to mention it). The task runs so fast on high end gpus that the task generated couldn't catch up with demand. It will be interesting when the task takes several hours to complete each, then supply exceeds demand.

Re: Work unit availability

I played with the GPU processing on my machine, as was happy it could do some. I can see in this thread that some of you really prefer the GPU to CPU, so I'm back to just CPU, so you all can enjoy the extra 15-20 tasks. Though I'm sure it will be done so quickly that you won't notice.

I'm so close to my year badge and while the GPU gives high "points" they don't take much time, so I for me with only one GPU and 4 CPU, the CPU tasks make more sense so I can show off my badge.

The what batch thread for CPU had guesses of this project being done in July. I have no idea how all this GPU processing will affect that, so I just want to make my year badge, before it is all done.

Remember doing science is great, but projects like this offer PR opportunities to teach and involve a large group of people too.

Re: Work unit availability

No worries Unixchick, just opt into both and if you get some GPU tasks, crunch them.

We're already doing a massive, massive cancer project that provides all the potential we need for PR that involves a large group of people. And nothing says PR like getting quick results.

The overall average speedup by using a GPU is 334x.
So, roughly, a GPU can do in a day what a CPU thread can do in a year.
If all backlogged CPU work was pulled and reissued as GPU work, this project would go into 'intermittent' status within 24 hours.
