Hesistant to contribute to this one

I am hesitant to contribute to climate models similar to how I am hesitant to contribute to calculating the next prime number, seti at home, the next decimal of Pi etc. I feel this way mostly because the other issues seem more urgently pressing; and more deterministic in eventual outcome.

But I also I am trying to keep an open mind about fairness in participation to all worthy projects.

could someone bullet-point the meaningful pro's of this project for me.

We can generate heat, and we can make ice on demand, so I'm sure we can participate in the weather to some degree, but I'm just not sold on what the tangible outcome is going to be in the near future. Id love some education on this.

Re: Hesistant to contribute to this one

Well, as I understand the premise behind this project, the goal is to improve accuracy of the timing and and amount of rainfall over a significant portion of Africa. If there is better idea of the rainfall patterns, the food production capacity of those areas could be enhanced in several different areas, such as type of crop, differing seed varieties for those crops, timing of planting, mitigation of flooding, water conservation methods to mitigate drought, and probably other areas of which I am unaware.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Re: Hesistant to contribute to this one

It's up to each contributor how they would like to prioritize their participation.

Africa still has meaningful food shortages. This project will help researchers aid the locals in enhancing their food supply. It's hard to imagine a more noble goal.

I can certainly argue that COVID has a more immediate personal impact on most individuals now but we have vaccines. I think that it is now a matter of time for COVID to be brought under control.

Whatever project you choose to support, happy crunching!

I think this page does a good job of that.

How much time do you need?

Re: Hesistant to contribute to this one

I second numya241's comment. A minimum of 100% more? Even with a reasonably fast processor I'm running over the time limit on the most recent WUs. I recently aborted a WU that had no chance of completing on time, one that my wingman let run and failed to complete by the deadline. Another I let run, but was well over the deadline; it got resent and the person who picked it up also failed to complete within the deadline.

Do you have too many WUs in yours queue? I'm running 4 WUs that should all finish in the next 8 hours with a deadline of 4/15-4/16.

Some projects don't work well if the PC is not running 24/7. As they can lose time processed back to the last checkpoint, when the PC is switched off and restarted.
