Does memtest use all CPU threads or just 1? I'd let BOINC to just run on half the threads and see if you still get an error, if yes, half the number of threads again. If no error, go to 3/4 of threads, each phase to home in. Monitor temps at each stage. Certainly I would set all to stock speeds, overclocking, undervolting, I don't, once burned, twice shy. If something is intermittent though, try if you can to swap ram between machines and see if the problem moves. Reseat the RAM sticks too. The stability tests I use (prime95 Large FFT, memtest64 and AIDA64) all use all of the 32 threads. The machine is completely at stock in terms of core speed, no voltage or frequency changes. I am considering swapping the RAM out with another machine, as you have suggested. I have a 4x16GB Dual Rank kit rated for 3200 MHz, and after reading what William Albert has said; I am going to try that instead as the Dual Rank 4 of 8 speed is rated to 2666 MHz officially vs 2133 on 8 of 8 for Single Rank. When I overclocked my old computer, I found that the OCCT Linpack test would often detect stability issues that other programs would miss. That being said... 64GB (8x8GB) DDR4-2933 16-16-16-36* While the Threadripper 2000 series is capable of running at DDR4-2933 with a simple single-rank config, it's unlikely to be able to operate at that frequency with all 8 slots filled with memory. WikiChip lists the Threadripper 2950X as maxing out at DDR4-2133 with eight single-rank DIMMs installed. I recommend disabling your overclock using the manufacturer's stock specifications (and disabling XMP/DOCP memory auto-overclocking), and seeing if that resolves the stability issue. You are correct. I think I have been too aggressive with how fast the memory controller on this processor can run with all this RAM. I need 64GB for my workstation as I am editing extremely large images (upwards of 12800x12800) and 32GB doesn't cut it anymore. I am going to take the 8x8 kit out and run the 4x16 in DR, at DDR4-2666 MHz which is the rated speed for this processor with 4 o f 8 DIMMS populated with Dual Rank memory. I have made a big misjudgement with running memory speeds higher than their rated specifications. I will make the necessary changes and update this thread if the processor creates any new errors or invalids. Thank you everyone for your input! |
