Memory requirements

I've installed the Linux client as detailed (by KNReed?) and the BOINC agent ran but I received a message in the terminal saying that I do not have enough memory - running P3 1GHZ with 128MB RAM (video shared). does this mean I cannot run WCG in Linux on this machine? sad

Re: Memory requirements

The current batch of work loaded into the grid for BOINC has a minimum requirement of 256MB of RAM for the linux client.

Re: Memory requirements

A PC133 256mb 168 pin module for your computer on Ebay costs about $25 US including shipping. It should take about a week to receive it once bidding is over so upgrading the memory on your PIII machine should not be too bad. Instead if you want to load up your machince with PC133 128mb 168 pin modules it can be very inexpensive. The demand right now is for the larger memory modules so the price on 128mb is low.

Re: Memory requirements

It is quite disappointing that my laptop with 256+64M i.e. 320M running Fedora Core 4 cannot run the Linux BOINC WU cos the free memory I got is about 180M. crying crying

sad Re: Memory requirements

I have the same problem but i DO have 256mb of ram. My ram is shared so I actually have 255 available ram so the client fails! Here's the message:
2005-11-07 11:13:45 [World Community Grid] Message from server: Your computer has only 254955520 byte
s of memory; workunit requires 1044480 more bytes

I only need about 1 more meg. This is a dedicated server so I would have to pay monthly to have to ram increased...

I don't see the problem why it couldn't run it? The required amount is 256mb but that's for total mem...

Pconfig, your're right. I finallly figure out why. Cos my mini notebook Compaq Evo N200 can only have a maximum of 196M physical memory even if I have plugged in a 256M memory module. Hope that in future the memory requirement can be lowered so that more machines can be used to do the crunching job.biggrin
