Re: Pause in Work for Smash Childhood Cancer

it's been interesting to watch on the global stats page, as results per day dropped.

I'm curious to see if/when it'll hit 0. At least it seems most of that computation power has shifted to OpenPandemics, as this will be the second day it'll hit over 1 million results turned in.

Re: Pause in Work for Smash Childhood Cancer

Is there a reason to run OpenPandemics projects with WCG/BOINC vs sticking with the full bore GPU/CPU I have pointed at Folding@Home and their COVID-19 research? Previously I had BOINC set to use all CPU for SCC but now that those projects have ended for the time being I have given the CPU to F@H. Honestly just asking if there is more value contributing to one vs the other.

Also how do I have it display my Sapphire badge for SCC next to my user name on the forums?

I am pretty sure you can set it through settings .

Keep SCC set so it will return when it returns. So far as which COVID-19 project is concerned, no-one knows which, if any, will succeed. Hedge your bets by doing both. Then you can say that you helped, whichever succeeds.

I'd pose that question in the OpenPandemics section and see what the mods/scientists might have to say. I would say that OpenPandemics is looking for a drug, not a vaccine - while folding may be more focused on a vaccine.

A quote from the research tab of WCG:
The research team wants not only to help find treatments for COVID-19, but also to create a fast-response, open source toolkit that will help all scientists quickly search for treatments for future pandemics. And in keeping with World Community Grid's open data policy, all data and tools that are developed through this project will be shared freely in the scientific community. The project’s primary goal is to search for potential treatments for COVID-19, so studying proteins from SARS-CoV2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is the highest priority. Additionally, scientists want to fight not only the current emergency, but also prepare for the ones that will likely follow. Future pandemics could stem from a progressive accumulation of mutations, which can eventually lead to a new virus variant. This is what happened when the virus SARS-CoV1 mutated to become SARS-CoV2. So, the research team is including proteins from the SARS-CoV1 and other viruses to be studied as part of OpenPandemics –COVID-19, which will help them assess how difficult would it be to find or design molecules capable of overcoming the inevitable mutations.

Re: Pause in Work for Smash Childhood Cancer

Why is it that SCC has been relegated to last place on the My Contribution statistics, behind even the projects finished many years ago?

Once it starts up again it will presumably move back to where it was before.

I maintain a spreadsheet of these records and can't see the point in moving suspended projects back and forth unnecessarily.

If they must move, why not to after the last current project?

Mike

I'd diversify and do both. Folding@home COVID19 on GPU, WCG OpenPandemics COVID19 on CPU. Leaving 1 core/thread open or whatever to feed the GPU, depending on what it needs.

Nobody really knows which projects may help more, so do them all if possible I say.

It moved because I think WCG changed it to Intermittent status. I agree with you that maybe it should be in the middle.

1. Active Projects
2. Intermittent/Paused Projects
3. Completed Projects

My GPU is too cheap to be useful - but doing a mixture of Rosetta@Home and WCG's OpenPandemics via BOINC is easier, because they both run on the same base distribution software - meaning there's fewer programs running at once?

Just getting back around to the forums and saw all your responses. Thanks guys.

Any word on SCC resuming?
