Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19) - NHS

Entirely possible that R2000 has done other projects and simply made the account here in 2013, forgot about it, then came back.

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19) - NHS

Would it be possible to get updates as the project clears various milestones in the approval process? Thanks to the control measures in place this project has a particular urgency for a lot of people and typical kept-in-the-dark approach isn't helping people's anxiety.
Uh, not sure where you have been but there is no "kept-in-the-dark approach". The official thread for this project's updates is https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forumswcg/viewthread_thread,42232
and there are 2 other threads for asking questions about the project:

The normal approach on this project is to make vague and rare updates about the progress of new sub-projects. The African Rainfall project is a prime example, as are the other climate sub-projects we've heard nothing about in some time.

Almost 2 years since those projects were announced, only 1 has been launched. I wonder if the others will even launch. https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=558

Go and have a look at the pages you linked to. Are there regular updates regarding the progress of the project through the Alpha process? No. Are there answers to questions about the project recently? No.
Still don't see it?
Where are the other two climate projects that were announced two years ago? How are they doing in the approval process? Did they make it to alpha testing yet? Who knows! WCG does NOT make serious efforts to keep members informed. We consistently get the first announcement, then nothing for Dog only knows how long with zero updates until maybe, MAYBE, we notice something in the Beta forum but that hasn't been happening either.
We the members provide ALL the crunching horsepower on this project for free, and we're fine with that, but is it REALLY so much to ask to keep us informed, particularly on a project with very immediate demand and implications??

Just can't give it up, can you? This thread is about COVID-19, not climate projects, so not sure why climate projects are being mentioned. If you feel that "kept-in-the-dark approach" is being done, please send a note to the WCG team. It would be interesting to see if you get response.

Dark Angel, you are a minority of one. The rest of the world would like priority to be given to COVID-19 so that we will still be alive to be able to crunch any new climate projects.

Get your priorities right.

Let's be honest here...this project is still a week to 10 days away from launch. By the time it starts, and millions of WUs have been returned to researchers, data analyzed, and promising compounds identified and tested, you will either be dead or immune (by either getting it or vaccine). This project is not looking for a vaccine but a treatment based on docking to viral proteins. There is one company already gearing up it's phase II clinical trial of a vaccine after completing dosing for phase I which indicates to me a vaccine will mostly likely be available before anything comes out of this research. Once 50% of the population has immunity one way or another, what pharmaceutical company is going to want to invest in developing a treatment drug? There won't be much of a market for it. I'll crunch just to get the badge, not because there will be any practical scientific value derived from the docking experiments. Pessimistically speaking of course....

Again, to be honest, there would probably be more usable, practical scientific value resulting from the climate projects

I would suggest that using a name of Open Pandemics implies that the aim for a treatment will more likely be for the next coronavirus pandemic.

Don't expect this to be the last! Remember SARS!

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19) - NHS

What are the odds that the viral protein would be the same? if not, then you have to do the docking again.
Additionally, are we doing this all over again:
Using Summit, researchers were able to simulate 8,000 compounds in a matter of days to model which could impact that infection process by binding to the virus’s spike, and have identified 77 small-molecule compounds, such as medications and natural compounds, that have shown the potential to impair COVID-19’s ability to dock with and infect host cells.

But, let's say for instance, we are going to use the 30 million database to dock against the protein, it won't be done in days. CEOs of companies developing vaccines are up against the clock and are worried that since the virus is spreading so quickly they won't have any subjects that haven't already been infected to use for testing the vaccine.
