Re: MCM: Switching to sarcoma & now on Android

Haswell i7-4771 (Win7 64-bit):, the first one is taking a little under 2 hours. We will see how it goes, but if they are consistent, that is it.

The next three on that machine are taking about 2 hours 35 minutes, or essentially the same as on Ubuntu. I expect that they are not as consistent as they first appeared.

I will have to average it over at least a day or two. Maybe others can check too.

Re: MCM: Switching to sarcoma & now on Android

After a few more hours of crunching and over a dozen more MCM, they are again averaging under two hours on Windows. So yes, they are faster on Windows from what I can see.

I will just do more SCC on my Ubuntu machines. It looks like they have a good supply now.

Thanks again for the heads up.

Hi , would you mind sharing with us how your able to configure your ubuntu device to only accept SCC app tasks ?

I have been trying with app_config.xml but without success.

Thanks.

I didn't have to. That was the only thing they would send me.

The easiest way is to just go to your Settings/Device Manager/Selected Profile, and check off only SCC.

Do you plan on releasing WUs for Linux on ARM? I would like to contribute also with my raspberry pi. Of course, I know that raspberry pi's don't have a lot of computing power, but maybe it could help finish at least a little bit faster.

Re: MCM: Switching to sarcoma & now on Android

I'd second the call for Linux ARM. The Pi 4 and 400, especially, are about equivalent in CPU power to an old laptop while using a lot less electricity, and OPN runs fine on them. The 400, with its massive heat sink, is especially good, and a Pi 4 with a cooling fan and heat sink can be cranked up to similar speeds (and is no slouch at stock clocking).

There are plenty of other ARM Linux SBCs out there that could also work nicely for energy-efficient crunching. The Odroid-N2+ looks particularly intriguing.

Granted, I would not want to run ARP or HST on a small ARM system, but the smaller work units are just fine. I'm seeing just under nine hours for an OPN unit on a Pi 400.

Re: MCM: Switching to sarcoma & now on Android

Another vote for MCM1 on ARM here! smile

When they did the last MCM1 Beta, there was an ARM version and I got a few on my Pi4 - they ran in about 65% of the time a typical OPN1 task was taking as they are, in fact, far more suitable for systems with no Level 3 cache than OPN1 is.

On any of my "conventional" systems (Intel or Ryzen) OPN1 tasks take about half as long as the MCM1 Betas were taking, by the way - OPN1 accesses L3 cache a lot more than MCM1 does!
I'm seeing just under nine hours for an OPN unit on a Pi 400.
I'm getting an average of around 7 hours per OPN1 task on my Pi4 (8GB, clocked at 2GHz) but I only run 3 at a time - 4 at a time would have actually resulted in less tasks per day, according to my testing!

Now waiting patiently for them to resolve the issues detected by the last Beta - it's been several months... Also hoping that the next time there needs to be a revision to the SCC1 code that an ARM version of that will be built (as SCC1 is another one that's easy on L3 cache.)

Cheers - Al.

P.S. What would be really nice for ARM applications would be if WCG could implement a pair of BOINC "plan classes" - one for old ARM chips and another for ARM chips with the extended instruction set and enhanced floating point.

Another vote for MCM1 on Linux / ARM!

Meanwhile I have 2 Raspberry Pi 4 with Android 11 running MCM....

Re: MCM: Switching to sarcoma & now on Android

One more vote for Linux ARM. My Raspberry Pi 4 with Ubuntu installed can only run OPN. If OPN ends and there is no other WCG project available, I might switch to Rosetta or something else when that happens.
