confused How did WCG miss this golden opportunity for free publicity?!?

Researchers are calling on the public to lend their computing power in an effort to develop a treatment for novel coronavirus. In a collaboration between Folding@home Consortium and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the public is being asked to donate unused computing power on their devices to help power models attempting to calculate a cure for novel coronavirus (covid-19). The initiative involves downloading a free client made by Folding@home that connects your computer to a larger network.

So Folding@home gets all the new users now.

WCG - you need to be nimble! Lesson learned???

Baker Labs (Rosetta) has also taken advantage of a PR opportunity.

Re: How did WCG miss this golden opportunity for free publicity?!?

There appear to be 2 covid-19's going around per the Chinese, the parent(ancestor as it was referred to) and a much more aggressive mutant. Because of the much more pro-active action where latter is hitting such as in DC, it has prevalently not been going around so much, but nobody seems to know whats happening in badly hit Iran, which of the 2.

Panic button 101.

Re: How did WCG miss this golden opportunity for free publicity?!?

Hi, we’re pleased to see volunteer computing efforts tackling the coronavirus and it’s something we’ve been discussing for World Community Grid for several weeks. Unlike most volunteer computing initiatives, we don’t run the science directly - instead, we partner with research organizations who need our computational resources. While conversations with our research partners continue, we’re less interested in launching a project just to capitalize on publicity. Instead, we only take on a project once we’re confident that there’s a legitimate scientific need for our volunteers’ contributions.

jihindo,

Speaking of projects, is there anything coming down the pipeline in 2020 aside from the 2 remaining climate projects?

It's all over the news, so old news by now, but showed up again at a news feed
There’s a Second More Dangerous Coronavirus
March 6, 2020 at 6:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard 30 Comments

Los Angeles Times: “The global outbreak that has sickened nearly 100,000 people across six continents may actually be fueled by two variants of the same coronavirus: one older and less aggressive and a newer version whose mutations may have made it more contagious and more deadly, according to a controversial new study.”

“Chinese scientists who compared the genetic sequences of 103 viral samples from patients infected with COVID-19 said their evidence suggests that the virulent version of the coronavirus — which they tagged the ‘L-type’ version — was the dominant strain in the earliest phase of the outbreak that began in Wuhan late last year. That strain, they said, appeared to recede as the epidemic progressed.”

“But among samples collected later, as COVID-19 spread across China and into other countries, a variant of the virus they dubbed the ‘S-type’ was more common, the scientists reported. They suggested that the genetic makeup of the S version more closely resembles coronaviruses circulating in bats and pangolins, the animals that are thought to have incubated the virus before it jumped to humans. And they surmised that it is a less virulent version.”

Thank you Lavaflow, very appreciated.
It is interesting that nobody speaks and reports about this eventuality in Europe.

Re: How did WCG miss this golden opportunity for free publicity?!?

@Papa3
WCG is simply honest.
Why should WCG make advertisement using Covid-19 if WCG does not have any science related to Covid-19?
About 10 years ago, it was a science related to Influenza (IADS).
It is not the case today with Covid-19. I am not even sure that such a project could be meaningful, what objectives?
In all cases, it is a question to ask to the scientists not to WCG.
Cheers,
Yves
