Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

hchc

On the basis that all of Africa is about 30 million square kilometres and estimating that sub-saharan africa would be about 20 million square kilometres and there were about 36000 units (x2) in 000, I would estimate each block to be about 20-25 Km squares. (say 15 miles)

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

We just wrapped up our monthly phone call with the researchers.

1. We've been able to speed up the work unit release rate, and we're now averaging about 5 years per day of run time. The WCG tech team thinks that this rate will remain the same for awhile.
2. There was a discussion about segmentation errors we're seeing in some work units. The researchers and developers are working together to find the cause(s) and to test possible solutions.
3. We asked the researchers if the current work units were addressing a specific country/region in sub-Saharan Africa (this question came up elsewhere in the forum). Right now, the work units are addressing rainfall patterns all over sub-Saharan Africa.

Early Stats:

Total Runtime ~ 564 years
Work units Completed ~ 193,605
Average Runtime per Workunit ~ 25 hours

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

Thanks, Caiti. The information is much appreciated. One query, though. The 5 years per day seems not to take into account the wingmen, whereas the rest of the stats seem to.

Re: Africa Rainfall Project - Monthly Mini-Updates

We just held our monthly phone call with the researchers.

1. The research team has obtained more storage. This allows us to increase the speed of the project again, so Uplinger is planning to double the speed today.
2. The principal investigator will be giving a talk about the project at an IBM meeting in the Netherlands in the next few weeks. (Right now the meeting is supposed to be in person, but it may be virtual due to restrictions regarding coronavirus.)

Latest Project Stats:

Total Runtime: ~ 881 years
Work Units Completed: ~ 306,234
Average Runtime per Workunit: ~ 25 hours
