New FightAIDS@Home Phase 2 work units

Greetings,

We are starting FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2 with new work units. The amount of work units that will be available will be limited. There should be around 5,000 work units running on the grid at all times. These 5,000 work units will take us about 12 months to run due to the generations needing to be created from the results.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Thanks for the news Keith.

I already have a couple of work units.

Are these not limited by the number of cores as before? I just got 14 on a 4 thread system.

I think you need to set the number you want per core under settings.

Another quick question, will these units all have a one day deadline?

They HAVE 1 day deadline, else we'll be here 2 years or more instead of 1.

If you are talking about the WU limit in the profile settings, those are not "per core". They are "per host". The previous FAH2 WUs were limited by the number of cores per host because of the quick turnaround required. Prevented resends due to not starting by the deadline because too many were queued up...

Just received 5 units, but to be honest, on day is a pretty short deadline. Not everyone is running dedicated devices 24/7. Seeing jobs timing out because the personal device was offline for one or two days may be frustrating for some volunteers.

I dont know, it was explained over and over and over many sections of FAAH why is there 1 day timer and why its not gonna change, EVER . Nobody is forcing anybody to join FAAH . There are other projects which got way longer deadline and help there would be appreciated so much there :)

Re: New FightAIDS@Home Phase 2 work units

Greetings,

It has been explained multiple times in the past, and I hope I can shed some more light on the topic if that is needed here. The way these work units operate, is that they get sent out and returned. Say they do 6 hours of work, after they come back and others in the batch are back, some processing is needed. The next step of 6 hours is sent back out for processing. In previous experiments, we did this over 150 times.

If a work unit has a 7 day deadline, we see some that don't come back for 10 days due to going out to reliable after failing. The average for these work units coming back is 3 days with a 7 day deadline. This would mean to do this experiment at a 7 day deadline, best we're going to see is 450 days, and that is with zero overhead (which there is some). At worst, we are going to be doing this project in about 1500 days, because we need ALL simulations past the 150 mark.

Now a 1 day deadline, gets the average result back in about 16 hours, this mean with zero overhead it could reach 150 in about 100 days...Worst case we are sitting closer to about 300 days.

We understand the complaints by the members, discussions with the researchers and ourselves, we think 1 day deadlines are best for this project. As others have mentioned, not every project has a 1 day deadline.

Hope this helps with some of the thoughts.

Note: The 150 mark is just an example, it depends on what the researchers need for the experiment.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: New FightAIDS@Home Phase 2 work units

Happy Holidays Uplinger,

Can the number of generations needed be announced with this and future FAH2 work units, and can we find a way to stop WU generation for simulations that pass the required mark early?

Thanks,

Dayle
