I just run the number of work units that I know can get completed by the deadline, and run other projects on the other cores.

You can control how many ARP1 are on your machine from 1 to 64 in the Device Manager profiles, custom section near the bottom. If 16 cores, set the value to e.g. 32. Never a unit will get close to expire. I have never mastered how to arrange how many cores for what projects, etc. also day/night cores will differ because of temperatures. I will reduce at night. I set 3-4 days of work downloaded. Most of the time I never have to abort, but the ARP1 this round are way out of wack, telling me 22 hours when they take more like 32 hours. That threw off everything. I will check the device manager, but I never could figure out how to arrange that. ![]() |

How many run concurrently on a machine is a different control with app_config.xml , a piece of pish to set up. If nightly airco is a concern you're way better off to reduce the CPU cycles through the Power & Sleep > Additional power settings > Change Plan Settings > Change Advance Power Settings > Processor Power Management > Maximum Power State > Settings and reduce that to e.g. 50%, making sure Minimum Power State is equal or lower than Max, else you get the Minimum, whichever is the highest. I'm about to go down to 70% or 2500Mhz per Coretemp as ambient temps are starting to hit 85F plus. That drastically reduces power use and thus heat generation.
----------------------------------------BTW the path to get to the CPU percentage setting in Windows 10 is a joke, 7 steps deep. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 22, 2020 3:09:43 PM] |

BTW the path to get to the CPU percentage setting in Windows 10 is a joke, 7 steps deep. Ohhh sheesh, this looks like a nightmare to set up.. I went into the WCG settings page, but that isn't going to work well for seeing up times and things. And the process you mention above looks like a PIA. 85F for me is cold. haha. My machine runs at 60-80C. I try to keep my temps below 80C. In summer that is very very hard, even with AC on. So at night I have to drop everything to 50% and some cores still hit that 80C no no point. I have 9 fans in my machine with a seven heatpipe heatsink. That i9-9900 chip just runs incredibly hot. I can run 100% during the daytime with AC on. But occasionally hit 80C if I am running other things. I really don't want to mess with the Win 10 settings. I just have never been able to control what percentage of my cores run for which projects. And actually I have not really had much problem getting WUs back on time, but these new Rainfall projects are taking way more time than last weeks. So it threw everything off. ![]() |

85F Ambient... the temp of the room. The comp run than at 160F (about 70C) at 2.5Ghz when heatsink etc are kept clean.

Some suggestion for you.. I put up 3M filtrate on all holes around my case. I have pets, no more pet hair inside my machine. I took off the right side cover too for air flow, covered the entire side with the 3M filtrate. There is still dust, but much much less.
----------------------------------------And my room temp without AC is around 90F. With Ac I can bring down to about 27C to 28C. Just below your 85F. But summers are just so hot to run projects. ![]() |

I assume I get no credit if the WU is sent back late? And I assume the deadline shown on Boinc is local time where I am? I can forsee many WUs not finishing tonight, more than 80% will be finished but will be a complete waste of CPU time. Such a pity.

I assume I get no credit if the WU is sent back late? Nope, you will still get credit, often even 24 hours (sometimes more) after the deadline. And I assume the deadline shown on Boinc is local time where I am? In the BOINC Manager, yes.I can forsee many WUs not finishing tonight, more than 80% will be finished but will be a complete waste of CPU time. Such a pity. Just finish them. Let them finish. See what happens.[Edit 2 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Jun 22, 2020 6:03:46 PM] |

Yep I planned to let them finished. And just after I wrote the post I did see in the FAQ what happens, I have 24 hours after deadline to submit. They will finish a few hours after deadline.

It doesn't make sense to give a deadline of only one week for an 18-hour task the same as a two hour task!?
