cool WCG should make a mobile app like DreamLab by Vodafone

It's been VERY difficult to get volunteer computing working on IOS devices due to Apple's restrictions, but it looks like Vodafone has done it with DreamLab which does cancer and Drug processing while the app is in the foreground and plugged in.

https://www.vodafone.com.au/foundation/dreamlab

I don't know if Dr. Anderson and crew on the BOINC dev team are aware of this project, but I've downloaded it and it WORKS and is allowed on the app store.

This is a golden opportunity to use IOS devices while people sleep and they are plugged in. There is a TON of computing cycles on modern IOS devices that could be used for WCG projects.

If the BOINC people can't or don't want to do it, WCG should talk with IBM and see if a WCG app could be made like DreamLab's does.

I've been waiting a LONG time for somebody to crack the nut that is volunteer computing on IOS and it looks like the Vodafone foundation has done it.

Hi Danathar,

This looks pretty cool. Have you posted this on the BOINC forums to see what their thoughts are? I for some reason though that Apple did not like these sort of applications so I wonder why it allowed dreamlab.

I did.

We'll see if any more respond. I think it has to probably do with the restrictions on how the app works (only if it's the forefront, only on power). Not sure why else.

Re: WCG should make a mobile app like DreamLab by Vodafone

One of the main things the BOINC Client does is download new applications and runs them.

So from my understanding, Apple does not allow for an executable to download another executable and run it. This gets you banned from the app store quickly.

From looking at their website, they have one application. This means that the science code is baked into the app itself. The problem with this from BOINC is we run different science applications on World Community Grid alone. We would need to have all the science code built into a single app for the app store.

BOINC would love to get into IOS.

Thanks,

Maybe if/when Apple transitions from x86 Intel CPUs to ARM CPUs in their desktops and laptops, then BOINC developers can port (translate) the existing macOS BOINC client app (and the science developers do the same) we'll get more support. Until then, it seems like a tall order since development resources are already strained as is.
