Hello,
could you please give me friendly advice in the following matter: I am sure that BOINC crunches faster if I run it on a headless system. The reason is that in headless mode, the CPU has less work with graphics. Doese anyone here have experience with BONINC on headless Systems? Is BOINC 10 per cent faster or how much in comparison to a normal Operating system? I got an additional question; Is there a Boot system which gives you the choice to boot headless or in normal mode? I should have this choice while booting, Thank you for any advice I want to have more crunching power for BOINC by crunching in headless mode. This is the aim of this post Thank you once again MS |

I have run headless a lot in the past and have never noticed a change in Boinc performance. There are two main things to eliminate graphics consuming cpu cycles. Turn off the screen saver and exit Boinc Manager. Neither are necessary for crunching.
----------------------------------------BTW Teamviewer is a good choice for controlling headless PCs. |

I've run 1-2 systems headless the past few years. Go with Linux since it doesn't require a license ($$$) and is less bloated and isn't quite a privacy nightmare with constant Windows 10 telemetry. I install bare minimum Debian GNU/Linux without a desktop environment (DE) and only enable SSH so that if I want to administer the computer, I SSH into it from another computer, and it's 100% command line.
----------------------------------------I use the graphical BOINC Manager on the main system to connect to headless systems if I want the ease and convenience of BOINC Manager instead of running boinccmd via SSH.

I use Ubuntu Server without GUI. It uses only 200 MB of RAM and that's it. Install the Boinc via APT or use the Boinc Docker image. You can connect to the headless machine's Boinc client with any Boinc Manager on the network.
----------------------------------------That's the most efficient way to run Boinc. Plus, you can use the headless machine as a NAS server for your home. Or, you can use one of the BOINC OS even without an HDD/SDD just using a pendive.

Linux is surely the better choice in term of performance (and of license costs ).
----------------------------------------If the host is running headless, you can use BoincTasks for supervising and managing your hosts: https://efmer.com/download-boinctasks/ BoincTasks is a Windows application also able to be ran using Wine on Linux machines. Cheers, Yves |

I run headless using Linux Mint and NoMachine.com to control them remotely. I also use BoincTasks to manage the rigs which is actually easier than using BoincManager. I made that decision based on costs.

There's some power saving though and that's the reason people running headless. A low power consumption gpu + monitor can be anywhere from 45 watts to 60 watts (and that's on the low side). Imagine the power saving if we have 15-20 systems running. |

I use Linux Mint and TeamViewer to keep my 8-10 'puters up and running.
----------------------------------------Couple of tips: 1) send team viewer an email explaining you are doing volunteer work for BOINC so maybe they won't think you are a business and blacklist you from free use. 2) put in a dummy plug or display emulator in each 'puter. Without one it seems teamviewer runs very slowly or not a t all. https://www.amazon.com/Displayport-Display-Em...kb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= 3) check each 'puters daily output occasionally using the Device Statistics on the WCG website. If the output falls off more than 10-15 percent, use team viewer to check up on it to see what's up. I found using this process i can keep several headless systems running without spending a lot of time. Add a cheap wireless usb and you can move the unit anywhere you have a power outlet. Just make sure you get one that has a linux driver available. I use this one https://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-150Mb...mp;qid=1582783687&sr= |

I also run a couple of headless machines and connect via SSH to them and control BOINC with boinctui, a very confortable command line tool, almost matching the GUI Boinc client. This way there is no need for teamviewer or sth similar.
Here are two articles that might help: https://dc.sheridon.de/how-to-control-boinc-on-command-line-with-boinctui https://dc.sheridon.de/remote-control-your-crunchers-ssh-how-to |

IMO it is much easier to connect to the headless pc via Boinc Manager (which has GUI and I'm sure it's running on your PC), than via SSH and use Boinc TUI.
