Re: OpenZika Project Update - July 2019 (News on Project Ending)

I don't get it the dates on KLIK's charts were always wrong. So they were just random dates so what was the benefit of it?
There is only one time when we know for certain that the end dates of a project are correct - and that's when a project has ended. Up until that time, everything is just guesswork. Now, we can have 'intelligent guessing', and that's by using the known number of WU's/batches completed/number of known WU's/batches still to do and adding into the equation, the speed that those batches are being processed.
Before WCG decided to 'foobar' the Research page, they also had an estimated 'end date' in an XML project extract - and, if I remember correctly, it was this info that KLIK was using.
The 'intelligent guess' (as was then), is far better than what we've got now - but no system is perfect, as there are any number of different things that can/will affect the end date. Obviously, the nearer the end date, the more accurate the 'inteligent guess' gets.
The drawback of the system we've got now, is it is just purely 'random guesswork' - the WCG crunchers (a vital part of distributed computing), don't have any tangible targets to use in deciding on what goal to aim for next. Due to this, a lot of people (myself included), have lost/are loosing interest in volunteering their spare CPU cycles to, what are extremely valuable research projects.

Re: OpenZika Project Update - July 2019 (News on Project Ending)

Since there is a monthly update with a much more detailed progress state why do you need the old page?

Sure it would be nice the new data could be shown on the progress page. Also a update once per hour or day would be nice but we shouldn't go back to the old page instead we should move forward :)

Edit: Based on the new data we could generate an enddate.

For example:
Available for Download: 1,945 batches In Progress: 6,563 batches (4,457,145 work units) Completed: 450,269 batches total, 6135 batches in the last 30 days, average of 205 batches/day

(1,945+6.563)/205 -> latest enddate 41 days. Since most batches are in progress it will end sooner.
Or we have new batches for 9-10 days.

Re: OpenZika Project Update - July 2019 (News on Project Ending)

Information like this is only useful once all batches have been loaded. The information that we don't have is the scientists best guess of how many more batches there might be after that. After all, I'm sure that at the start of the project they must have been asked for an estimate of the amount of work to be performed on the grid. IBM would not have let the project even get under way if the amount of work was going to be too small. The bit that is missing is the ongoing feedback from the scientists as to their current estimate of total work still to be done. I really don't understand why they are not asked for that information on a monthly basis at the meetings that Caiti reports to us on.

9/30/19 22:44:43 ZIKA_ 000458546

This was the highest batch number I've seen. The batch numbers I'm getting are all over the place so it doesn't look like they're running them in sequence.

For example I got ZIKA_ 000457979_ x5tfr_ ZIKV_ NS5_ s3_ 0880_ 0-- on 10/1

Re: OpenZika Project Update - July 2019 (News on Project Ending)

I'm currently working on various batches between 457998 to 458551 and none are resends so they does seem to be quite a range of current batches. I should mention that all downloaded today.

Re: OpenZika Project Update - July 2019 (News on Project Ending)

Hi all,

We've actually received some additional batches from the researchers over the weekend. These should be the last set of batches we will receive, and it will push the end of new work for this project until around the end of October. The final batch number is now 465016.

If this was the SCC forum I'd be whooping with joy. As it is, I'm swearing (and not under my breath) because I could have got my next SCC badge and still got my next Zika badge (which is due in a couple of days now).

Oh well. Coffee time.
