WCG is switching to email based logins

I got this email from WCG. Everyone who runs scripts using username logins should take notice.

Dear deltavee,

We wanted to let you know that World Community Grid is switching from username logins to email-based logins. This change means that every World Community Grid account must have a unique email address.

Currently your email address is associated with the following World Community Grid accounts:
deltavee
<account 2>
<account 3>

If you want to keep the accounts listed above, please log in to each account and assign each account to a separate email address by July 22, 2019.

After July 22, 2019, your account with the username deltavee will be retained and you will no longer be able to access your other member accounts.

If you have not assigned each account to a separate email address by July 22, 2019, you will need to contact World Community Grid support for assistance assigning unique email addresses to those inaccessible accounts. We regret that we are unable to merge World Community Grid accounts.

Thank you for supporting humanitarian scientific research.

The World Community Grid team

Re: WCG is switching to email based logins

Greetings,

We are working towards email based logins and we hope to release that update sometime in August. We will be sending out communications to everyone a few weeks before that change.

At this point we are trying to get the data in the database ready for this change. There were about 9000 email addresses that were tied to more than one account in the system and we needed to get email address unique in the system (and add a unique constraint on the column) before we can make the change.

As a result, we have sent out early communications to those people who need to take action on their accounts early so that they have time to make those changes.

This change will let BOINC remove certain pieces of custom code in the code base that they have had due to our username based login.

Let us know if you have any more questions about the pending change.

Thanks!
- Kevin

Re: WCG is switching to email based logins

CPiD has always been unique to an email address,. Enroll at 10 projects and none will be the same until the client finds which one is the oldest and starts pushing that one out to all the linked projects.

This may be why WCG is switching to email based logins. All three of my WCG accounts have the same email address but different CPIDs.

Re: WCG is switching to email based logins

At least Boincstats dismisses all exported user stats beyond the first email/cpid set it encounters, a long standing complaint. Duplicate email use was already impossible since years, those 9000 are legacy from before the restriction.

Re: WCG is switching to email based logins

1. Will we still have the option to change e-mail addresses in the future in the event we stop using a certain e-mail address or simply want to move to a new one?

2. I hope this gets us closer to vanilla BOINC codebase on the back-end allowing for more standard features like the ability to merge existing Device IDs or delete unused Device IDs. tongue

There is probably an e-mail progress bar somewhere that says when the rest of us will get the notification.
