Is this my problem, or your problem? RSA key check failure.

I was examining my boinc_client.log for something else, and noticed stuff like this all year. It does not seem to be causing me problems, but I wish it were not happening. Have I screwed something up (in which case, how do I fix it), or is something else wrong?

Should I have posted this somewhere else?
If so, where?

Re: Is this my problem, or your problem? RSA key check failure.

Jean-David,

Whilst I can't give you a one-liner as to how to solve that, I will point out that beta12 appears to have been Computing for Clean Water -- I've just spent a happy half hour or so digging through the old beta threads to try to find which it was! And that was quite a time ago, wasn't it!

Off-hand, I can think of two possibilities, both of which relate to how old the offending files might be. The first is that there's something strange about checksums for those particular files (version?) or that the files are corrupt/no longer exist. The other is that the files listed in your client_state.xml file for WCG don't quite tally with what's in the projects folder. I must point out that this is not based on first-hand experience, so it could be something else completely!

A reset might resolve this (with a little care about work buffers...) - however, there may be a less drastic solution depending on circumstances, but that's a hands-on situation, not suitable for a remote diagnostic.

I don't know whether this has been of any help (probably not!) But I reckoned someone ought to say something! And as for where you should've posted it, as a "generic" question it was either here or the BOINC Agent forum, I'd guess...

Good luck sorting it out - Al.

[Edited to fix typos.]

Re: Is this my problem, or your problem? RSA key check failure.

I keep reading this and thinking "I'm sure there should be someone on here who knows what this is", but I'm afraid that I myself do not. A couple of (very minor) thoughts have come to mind, though, and they both seem to assume that the OP has either not run BOINC for a long time, or has just updated the client to a more recent version.

There was some hiccough with the certificate having to be changed way back when one of the certificate authorities stopped being trusted. IIRC that encouraged everyone to make sure they were on a recent BOINC client. I also seem to remember that some changes were made in the more recent client versions to better clean out old unused files. I think this relates to one or other of those, but I'm afraid that I'm just guessing.

If this problem happened just once, I think you should ignore it and assume that it's just a clear-out taking place. However, if it happens every time you restart the client then I would suggest that you check your client version and, if it's not current, update to the current level. Why not do that anyway? It can't do any harm ...

I do not know if it happens every time or not. What happens if I just delete those files? If they are not needed, they will be gone, and if they are needed, will they not just be downloaded again?

I cannot replace my boinc client until EPEL does it, and I do not think they will ever do it. I am currently running

boinc-client-7.2.33-3.git1994cc8.el6.x86_64
boinc-manager-7.2.33-3.git1994cc8.el6.x86_64

Re: Is this my problem, or your problem? RSA key check failure.

Two comments. First, there's a control file which lists what files you should have. If you delete the files and then get errors, I would suggest that you do a project reset. Secondly, it is possible to download a more recent version directly from Berkeley, but you're probably doing the right thing to wait for your distro to test a newer version and update their repository.

But, as I keep saying, I feel I'm not on firm ground here and I'm sure others know far more than I do!

What file is that? Most, if not all, of the files are over a year old and do not correspond to tasks that are currently being issued.

boinc-client-7.2.33-3.git1994cc8.el6.x86_64 from EPEL suggests that you might be running Redhat/Centos version 6 or similar based distribution. Version 6 is in the later stages of its support cycle and probably now only receiving bug/security fixes only. EOL for CentOS 6, for example, is November 30, 2020. No longer have any version 6 systems running here, so cannot verify if its related to older boinc software.

Considered updating to version 7? (or 8 - CentOS version 8 coming soon if that is what you are running). EPEL version for 7 is currently boinc-client-7.14.2-17.el7.x86_64.

I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.10 at the moment, and have RHEL8 on a thumb drive. There are several considerations to upgrading.

1.) I cannot upgrade until EPEL starts releasing items for RHEL 8, and last I looked, they have not done so.

2.) I do not know if I can boot from a thumb drive with my machine. And the RHEL8 release will not fit on a DVD disk. Next time I need to reboot my machine, I will check on this.

3.) Upgrading is a very time consuming proposition. While it takes only a few hours to do the install, fixing up all the little configuration nuisances usually takes me about a month of irritation and swearing. In the meantime, certain applications (gnucash, for one) cannot be used, and this is intolerable as I am treasurer for a non-profit that cannot really tolerate being down for much over a week.

4.) It took me over a month to get VLC to work, and other video display programs could not be made to work, so I must use that. That one is a library hell situation. That is one reason I like Red Hat: they support their releases for 10 years, so I do not normally need to upgrade. I could not stand Fedora because of all the upgrades and short-term support.

Re: Is this my problem, or your problem? RSA key check failure.

Jean-David
Many years ago ran Fedora - but dropped it as a result of the all too frequent Version changes and the resulting work load. However, in more recent times they have provided a means of upgrading from one version to the next which makes life much easier. Currently have 3 Fedora system which started as Version 26 and all successfully updated 26 -> 27 - 28 -29 and now -> 30.

Back 2015 there were Certificate changes and one system here would not longer communicate with WCG. No suitable more recent rpm available. Was fortunate enough to build boinc from source - lucky in that it complied with no errors, phew...

dated Jul 14, 2015. Is this an option for you...
