I get the following message at start-up
----------------------------------------all-series-invalid-entry-length-16-fixed-up-to-11 After the screen flashes black a few times My username is TDXSP I am aware it is to do with the directory name being too long I am not sure I want to go through all of the typing to fix it. This happened after I updated from Zorin 12.1 to 12.4 I updated through the update screen. Literally all I did was installed 12 1 then update to 12.4 if it makes any difference I have a separate swap and home partition ![]() |

I get the following message at start-up That's strange if you didn't have the issue with Zorin 12.1 and just upgraded to 12.4, Speedy.all-series-invalid-entry-length-16-fixed-up-to-11 I have a separate swap and home partition Very wise to have a separate home partition! Now I've googled for your error message and I found a solution for Ubuntu, which should work for Zorin ("Zorin OS is a personal computer operating system based on Ubuntu"), too: (Last edited by grahammechanical; August 23rd, 2016 at 01:28 PM.) May I explain where things went wrong so that you avoid this happening again? And it is not necessarily your fault. Here's more on the solution:When we install Ubuntu we need to set some information such as our name; a user name & password. We also need to set a name for the machine/installation so that it can be identified when we connect to a network. This is where things went wrong for you. The panel where we set a name for the machine already has the words: "System-Product-Name." We need to delete what is written in that panel and replace it with something of our own choosing. It is very easy, perhaps too easy, to add to what is already written there instead of replacing what is written there. You are not the first person to trip up over this. I did when I first installed Ubuntu. You can follow the advice given above or do what I did when I fell into this trap. Ubuntu was the only OS on the machine and I did not have any personal data on the machine. So, I reinstalled. And during the installation process I replaced "System-Product-Name" with a name of my choosing. The system does need a rod@something: -$ You choose what the something should be. If you are dual booting with Windows then re-installation becomes a bit more complicated than simply choosing "Erase disk & install Ubuntu." We learn more when we get the answer wrong, then we do when we get the answer right. We do not get it wrong a second time. Regards. You’ll need to edit your /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files. Just follow this simple tutorial on how to do it. PS. If your shell command prompt is wayyy too long, type this: PS1=$ |

Thank you for this information. At some stage I think what I would do is reinstall 12.1 but make sure I remove "system product name" then run a system update. I may even do it through the terminal this time just so I can see the difference.
----------------------------------------The reason why I chose "Zorin" in the 1st place is because from statute I did on Google it is the most Windows like Linux around. If you can think of any easier Windows lookalike distributions please feel free to suggest them. I am very new to the Linux family ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Speedy51 at Apr 7, 2019 9:53:32 PM] |

That's what I would do, too, at this stage. The reason why I chose "Zorin" in the 1st place is because from statute I did on Google it is the most Windows like Linux around. If you can think of any easier Windows lookalike distributions please feel free to suggest them. I am very new to the Linux family From what I learned through Google you're doing great. At the bottom of this article I found "The 5 Best Linux Distros For Beginners in 2019" and it includes Zorin. All my computers have been running Fedora (formerly Fedora Core and Red Hat Linux before that), ever since I started using Linux in 1999. My current Desktop Environment is Xfce. |
