Re: Are there any possible drawbacks to opting in to beta testing?

I've never had a beta WU do anything nasty to any of my machines, but there have been times when they've crashed out (just showing an error in BOINC manager) or have failed validation. The validators are usually paused for a beta so that the techs can start them and check how the new validator is working -- that's as much the point of the beta as running the app.
The techs try to play nice and make sure that we are credited for all WUs processed, even those that fail, but it's all done manually and things slip through, but that's not a big price for helping get new science off the ground.

Re: Are there any possible drawbacks to opting in to beta testing?

I have run a little over 2000 Beta units and do not recall any system problems. There have been some instances where the Beta unit mis-fired, but that was because they were configured incorrectly, which is exactly why they were run as Beta units - to identify the bugs before full production.
Cheers

Re: Are there any possible drawbacks to opting in to beta testing?

After having run 10k + here Only issues like the others have said.

Sometimes we also suspend/un-suspend WU's to see if they restart.
reboot system in middle of WU to see if it does what it's suppose to.
In General somewhat try and break it. Then tell Techs what happened if anything went wrong (and how we did it, so it might be reproduced).
