Re: Where are the new Climate projects?

Excited to get working on the climate related projects and plan on upgrades in conjunction with their launch. I assume that they will be CPU-based rather than GPU-based units, right?

All the projects on WCG have all been CPU based so far, and there hasn't been indications that this might change anytime soon. Since BOINC can support multiple projects, you might want explore adding another project such as GPUGrid to keep your GPU busy.

- not quite, there has been 1 GPU based project running on WCG, although none since.

WCG are able to run projects that have a GPU capability - thing is, finding a project that can use this capability (not as easy as it sounds). Obviously, if you know any scientists/researchers who are wanting 'the numbers crunched' - and there's obviously enough work to keep the power of WCG working on it so that it's worthwhile investing the time/effort to port it over, then I'm sure WCG would be happy to hear from them.

Unfortunately I do not have the electrical capacity in my current cluster's power circuit to run max CPU and GPU usage, so I end up having to find a safe balance. Right now I am all in with WCG (GPUgrid would require me to provide less compute power to WCG). Maybe my upgrade should be to a higher amp commercial circuit!

Re: Where are the new Climate projects?

Hello everyone,

We're planning launch the first project very soon. Projects always take at least a few months to onboard, and the three climate/environmental projects are different from anything we've done before in some important ways. (For example, they include providing the researchers with data from The Weather Company, which is owned by IBM.)

And yes, do keep an eye on the beta announcements over the next few weeks!

Thanks,

Caiti

Hi,
Are there any further updates?

Been a few months since the announcement of 3 new climate change projects. Any news or updates on when these will be released to us?

In Beta now...maybe! wink

Re: Where are the new Climate projects?

Hello everyone,

A quick update on the status of the first environmental project: The beta test is largely complete, and the research team is reviewing the results. After the test, the researchers and our developers have realized that the storage needs for this project are much larger and more unique than we had originally thought, so we're looking at creating a custom option for them.

This project is a unique use of a particular type of software, and one of the few times that it's been used.

Thanks to everyone for your patience as we work behind the scenes to bring the project to fruition.

Juan
